Synthetic or natural? High zinc or zinc additive?
Shell Helix HX7 15W-50 High Mileage. Because it has a higher Zinc content than most others in this price range.
Ive been running Joe Gibbs racing oil synthetic hot rod oil, which is formulated for older engines, in my C3 Corvette. Im thinking I should be using the same stuff in my 400i for the same reasons, but am not as familiar with the Colombo V12 as small block Chevys. Anybody using this in their 365/400/412?
I searched before starting this thread, and didnt see on in this section. Huge long post on Corvette Forum on this topic, but im not sure what my new to me 400i needs.
Me neither, mate. My 308 runs a high Zinc 15W50, I think (Penrite Racing 15). The fluids were supposedly changed on the 400 when I bought it, but I'm suspecting more BS, so about to change them again - whatever the mechanic suggests. Klink, what are you running?
I use Amsoil Z-Rod Here are a couple of good threads: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/365-gt4-2-2-400-412/484460-recommended-engine-oil-filter-oil-type.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/365-gt4-2-2-400-412/320373-what-oil-my-engine.html
Thanks- not sure why I didn't find those when I searched! So the folks at Aston Martin New England, said they would use Eni (renamed Agip) i-Sint 10W-40. The discussion on the first link is similar to other discussions i've seen on other car's forums. Also considering what I am using in my other older cars, the Joe Gibbs Racing Oils Driven Hot Rod synthetic, which is designed for older cars with flat tappet cams. What was the OEM filter on our cars? What brand? Thanks
Jason.... Original oil filters were UFI, at about $25 each, I use Baldwin B253 filters, from Grainger Supply....$9 each last time I got them. I also run Castrol GTX 20w-50w. No oil mess when changing the filters, they have a check valve in them, no drips. Why ?....cause that is what the 400i had in it when I bought it, and, what the PO had written in "shaky" handwritten ink on the inside cover of the O/Manuel, along with battery changes, spark plugs, etc......the service history of 55027. PS: Yes, that's a plug lead off laying there, and I have cleaned that mess up a bit since the photo. Gary Image Unavailable, Please Login
Penrite 10w 50 Full synthetic, this oil has a high zinc level which is what you want for a flat tappet engine. Penrite Oil | HPR 10 10W-50 (Full Synthetic) I use UFI filters. M
I'm using Rotella T6 5-40 now but haven't spent a lot of time at high temps (my A/c doesnt work). It's cheap enough to change annually and you can buy it in 5 gallon buckets. Mobil 15-50 is a popular choice. And my 911 friends swear by Brad Penn 20-50.
Here is the link to Mobil 1 oil specifications. https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us/pvl/files/pdfs/mobil-1-oil-product-specs-guide.pdf It shows the 15-50 to have a zinc content of 1300. This oil is available at Walmart for about $27 for a 5qt jug. How much zinc do the oils have that you guys are using?
Link below is from Corvette Forum. An interesting, entertaining and controversial discussion, but there are some good data points. The conclusions people draw from them are clearly not agreed upon. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c3-tech-performance/3072456-motor-oil-wear-test-and-lab-test-data.html
A local shop in CT, SportAuto by Bill Pollard (SportAuto - Home), uses a locally produced specialty performance oil company product from Spectro Oil that says it is "specially formulated for vintage, performance, and classic automobiles with the zinc and phosphorus your special car needs." Motor-Guard | Spectro Oils The oil i've been using in my older Corvette is Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil's "Hot Rod" synthetic. http://www.drivenracingoil.com/dro/hr1-conventional-15w-248html I use their racing oil in my race car (many race teams in the states in IMSA, NASCAR, etc... use their oil). I spoke with one of their engineers this morning who said the Hot Rod 10W50 would be best to use in the F-Car V12.
So you can see there are many options for oil and all exceed the specs of what was originally poured into the crankcase. I must admit that I get a brief flash of cynicism when I see Bill Pollard's name as he signed off on ( I don't believe he actually did the inspection) a PPI on my car that bore almost no resemblance to the actual condition of the car.
I used Mobil 1 15W-50 in my 400i for 15 years and about 18,000 miles. Filters were UFI until their famous recall when I switched to Baldwin and never looked back. Baldwin is highly regarded by many Ferrari owners who have vintage cars worth many times more than a 400i.
Not to derail the thread Christian but were you present during the ppi? The reason I ask is that I was during my ppi in California and it was very educational as things were explained to me. I also think that being there ensured a thorough inspection and I highly recommend taking the time to be on the scene.
