    Since it is the other side of the International Date Line, as I write this it is August 15 in Japan, the anniversary of the day when Japan's Emperor Hirohito commanded the government to accept the surrender terms the United States had demanded, including a provision that the authority of the Emperor and of the government shall be subject to the Allied supreme commander. This provoked a military coup that seized the Imperial Palace and burned down the prime minister's residence. It was quickly put down and the surrender agreement delivered to General MacArthur. Seventy-five years ago today.

    Hard to imagine. I was born in 1952. I felt deprived as a kid because we had a black and white TV while the cool kids had color TVs.
