    Outsourcing anything, including engines, is done to keep costs lower. It's hard to hit economy of scales with low production. Some things are still kept in house, but engines are pretty expensive to make. Especially with modern emissions criteria while trying to stay competitive with performance.

    I don't think it damages cred at all. Lotus has done this for years, I still dig them totally.

    SAAB started building cars in their aircraft factory after WW2. They did not manufacture an engine, even for their planes.

    So...

    They used DKW 2-strokes, then Ford V-4's, then a Triumph straight 4. When they started building their own engines, they re-worked the Triumph engine...
    Later the GM Opel V-6.

    Didn't seem to be an issue.
