Let me start by stating I really cannot stand Donald most of the time, but I have to admit, I truly like his recent proposal for rebuilding Ground Zero. The previous "Freedom Tower" design totally leaves me cold. Donalds plan looks cleaner and appears to pay homage to the original buildings far better. The Freedom Towers just look like a haphazard mess littering the skyline.

I think his propsal comes unsolicited and the media and Gov Pataki seemed to be bashing hm last night.

What are your opinions? (of the Trade Center Design, NOT Donald please)

    Hopefully this link will work:

I think it's SICK!!! It's like a widower remarrying a carbon copy of his late wife.

I know I had to keep my comments about The Donald to myself but one word always comes to mind: "megalomania".

I think the Donald is a jerk, but I also think his comment about the other proposed designs being the worst crap architecture (or something to that effect) that he had ever seen is correct.

The design he has proposed would restore NY, as opposed to putting up some monstrosity that will do nothing but make us dwell on past tragedy every time we see it.

I agree w/ Trumps comments but not sure I understand how his "influence" is best served in a press meeting. I would think Silverstein would not care for
Trump stilling any "thunder" or "spotlight" but then again it's Trump. He cant' help it.
The biggest obstacle as he mentioned are tenants to occupy. Additionally, should their be a teriost act on the new tower the tenants could very well not renew their lease.
But I agree. Put em back up better and more grand but not at the expense of "lives" if it can't be secured. I like his model and cause for more of a "replacement" concept than a glorified architect's abstract.

I think it's a good idea and if his is a more cohesive design then all the better. There is a lot to be said for rebuilding and I don't see anything wrong with a similar design. It sends a message to whomever was behind their destruction that we will not be deterred.

But it's going to be an unsettling reminder of 9-11 for many.

Can you image taking a job on the top floor restaurant and thinking what it was it must have been like on 9-11, looking out the window and seeing a plane flying right at you?

I think I'd rather take a job selling newspapers in the subway.

I think the idea is pretty creepy. Stop and think about it. Would YOU enjoy going to work every day on the exact same spot where 3000 people died in one of the nations most traumatic moments of horror and suffering? That would be like taking your family for a picnic lunch at Auschwitz.

If they build the "Freedom Tower," any employee or visitor will still be in the same spot that the 3000 died.

    I like Trump's idea.

Duh!!! Exactly what I said. Remember the McDonalds restaurant in California where that lunatic gunned down a dozen people many years ago? McDonalds decided to simply bulldoze the restaurant and turn it into a memorial park. You can't UNDO what happened on 9/11. You can't have a relaxing picnic at Auschwitz or a drive in restaurant on Omaha Beach. It's more respectful simply to remember what happened.
I think this is REALLY about the MONEY. The Fat Cats simply can't stand to see a prime piece of NYC real estate sitting idle. But if I owned a Ferrari and parked it on the street every day, and in 1993 somebody blew the car into pieces with a bomb, and then I spent several years and thousands of dollars restoring the car, and then in 2001 somebody DELIBERATELY crashed an airplane into my Ferrari totally destroying it, you can bet that I wouldn't be stupid enough to buy another Ferrari and park it in the same place.

I was under the impression that you meant they would literally be in the same spot if the towers were brought back as they were.

So, are you suggesting an memorial occupying the entire site? Seriously, that's not even remotely realistic. Of course it's about the money! I mean absolutely no disrespect to the 9/11 victims and their families when I say this but NYC real estate is just far too valuable. It would never happen.

True, because judging from Trumps past history, he couldn't care less about anything except making money. Remember when he tried to get that old lady's apartment building torn down in New Jersey because it was blocking the progress of his casino? His PERSONAL casino project! The PERSONAL project that he attempted to utilize the imminent domain law for, in order to declare that the little old lady's appartment building was blocking the "public" progress of his PERSONAL casino? He tried to get his lawyers to argue that the lady's building was subject to imminent domain law, even though he just wanted to bulldoze HER building in order to build HIS building. Fortunately, the courts ruled in the lady's favor. And didn't Trump's casino run into some financial trouble later on anyway?

Yes, Trump is relentless when he wants something. He is not alone though. There are many others who would be after it if he wasn't. Real estate in NYC is finite and precious.

The best idea I have heard is to just make the site into a very nice park.

If you build Trumps idea and have two new and massive towers, who is going to lease them? What companies are going to get tens of thousands of employees to come to work every day in the #1 terrorist target on the planet?

If you rebuild the towers, every Islamic whacko on the planet will dream of nothing else but how to destroy them again.

I think Trumps vision is better aesthetically. I also like its "F-CK YOU" in your face response to the terrorists. But I honestly do not think its economically viable. When asked about this directly, Trump even agreed that he felt leasing such huge square footage given the history and war on terror realities would be extremely difficult.

    Build a nice park.

It's a nice thought but I've never heard of any property owners willing to donate a $1,000,000,000.00 park to a city. (Not sure exactly what the land is worth but you get my thinking)

I think his idea is right on the money as well as his comments about the other design.

As for working where those people died....I'd have no problem with it....and if they could talk today nor do I think any of them would either.

While I like both ideas, there's no way the area will become a park.

As for being the #1 Terrorism target on the planet-- that may be true if the replacement building(s) went up tomorrow, but would it still be 10 years from now? There won't be a problem staffing them as there are plenty of people living in NYC who will take any job that can sustain their obscenely high rents. I've never heard of anyone declining a position based on office location, have you? (assuming that the office is in the same city as their residence.)

You're also missing the fact that new structures erected to 'look' like the twin towers will not be engineered in the same manner as they were 30 years ago. We've got all sorts of neat gizmo's and doo-dad's that could now warn all occupants in the event of an attack with planes, and we're all aware of the potential threat and the damage it can cause.. we didn't recognize this in 2001 and it was exploited.

As for the dead, I'd like to believe that they'd enjoy giving a big middle finger to the organizations responsible for their deaths. Rebuilding and populating (with a nod to their sacrifice/loss) seems like a logical choice over a somewhat useless park for tourists to gather at.
