Tost: F1's constructor definition is “out of date”

    https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/tost-f1s-constructor-definition-is-out-of-date-/4856751/?ic_source=home-page-widget&ic_medium=widget&ic_campaign=widget-6

Scuderia AlphaTauri Formula 1 boss Franz Tost believes that the definition of a constructor is “out of date”, and that teams should be able to buy more parts from rivals.
The Austrian’s view clashes with the prevailing mood in the paddock in the wake of the Racing Point copying case, with the FIA confirming that it wants to ensure that teams fully comply with the requirement to design their own listed parts.
Tost believes that his team should be allowed to take even more advantage of its relationship with sister outfit Red Bull Racing, with the two teams sharing resources via design facility Red Bull Technology.

“The personal opinion from my side is that teams should be able to buy much more from another team,” said Austrian. “Why? Because for me this philosophy that every team must be a constructor is out of date.
“I know all the F1 purists say, ‘Ah, we must be a constructor. Every team must design everything in-house.’ The question is, and you know the engineers are saying this, but how do you finance everything?

“Because we reached such a high level on the technical side, the top teams have such a fantastic infrastructure. If someone wants to come into F1 – even the teams which are in F1, if they want to catch up – this is very difficult, and nearly impossible.
“And you spend millions. And I’m just asking, what for? I’m asking, why does every team have to have its own wind tunnel, has to have its own CFD, has to have 500-600 employees? OK, now there is the cost cap coming. But nevertheless in my opinion we still spend too much money, especially now under these difficult economic circumstances.
“But the regulation is how it is. Personally I still think back to the days when we came to F1 with Toro Rosso and we just got a one-year-old car from Red Bull Technology, and we could race with a third of the money.”

Tost also questioned the FIA’s plan to rein in copying of cars via photography or other “reverse engineering” techniques.
“You cannot forbid that teams make photos from the other cars,” he said. “This is also as old as F1 is itself. The question is now, coming back now to these special brake ducts, of course you cannot make pictures from the inside, from all the small parts of the brake ducts, out on the race track.
“That means we have to get these parts to make the photos and this is now the question whether this is legal or whether this is not legal, whether you violate intellectual property rights or not. But this is not in my hands to decide. I think this is then the question the International Court of Appeal will have to answer.”

Spec series is the future. Or 1 quite close to it. F1 is changing and we may or may not like all of that either lol

Well, if you reduce the cost per year per team, at some point you get to the pint where you cannot afford to design, test, construct some of the stuff in race cars.

Nuts, bolts, washers plumbing, connectors, wiring have all reached that point a long time ago.
Engines and transmissions are probably there {except for a few} Since the rear suspension hangs off the transmission cases, you get to buy these along with the rest of the package.

With everyone using standardized planks, and tires:: This only leaves {chassis, front suspension, steering, aero, and packaging} to be constructed.

I get Tost's point; but I yearn for a day when people could invent things like Lotus 79.....

As do I. We see the end of that now it appears, to some degree.

Soon F1 will have all the car manufacturing farmed out to state owned Chinese companies and the only thing different about the cars will be the name on the package. And next the drivers won't be in the cars, but in simulator chairs. Just watch drone racing...this is where it is going. Just like our production cars. How many are using ZF 8 speed transmissions, or outsourced infotainment and ECU software or alloy wheels made in China, it is all just one big factory. Digital has destroyed individuality. You will never see another Jag XKE or a Maserati A6G2000 or a Ferrari 275 GTB or even a 1999 Porsche 996. Enjoy anything analog while you can...maybe WRC and vintage events are the last hurrah.

Well, for obvious reasons Tost is not impartial about this.

I agree with Franz Tost: there are not 10 constructors capable to build 10 different competitive cars. That is plainly obvious.

There is a solution half-way between the present situation and specs series: customer cars.

Only Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and Renault would be constructors.

Teams would be allowed to buy complete cars from constructors, but wouldn't score in the WCC.

Customer teams would have their ranking and pay scale, different from "genuine" constructors.

HAAS, Alpha Tauri, Racing Point (at the moment), Williams and perhaps Sauber would be the ideal customer candidates.

Indeed, most teams do not have the funds to develop every component. If they did, we wouldn't have Mercedes/Ferrari/RedBull dominance the way we have had for the past decades. It's not like using Mercedes brake ducts suddenly means you're at a huge advantage. It does mean you're free to focus on the rest of the car. If you could buy every component you'd make it easier for new teams. Just make it so a complete car of last years winning design can't be pieced together. No straight mercedes/ferrari/RB kitcars.
