November 10. We will see if they are able to follow up the success of the 1098/1198 with this bike. I am skeptical if the spy shots and rumors of much higher MSRP are true.
let's see... the 851/888 was an instant legend. the 916 was ground breaking and perhaps remains the sexiest motorcycle in history. what will the panigale be?
1. If it is expensive and has challenging looks it will not sell despite how competent it might be (999) 2. If it is expensive and looks good it will sell in more limited quantities than the 1098/1198 after the initial demand is satisfied. 3. If it is in line with their current competitive pricing and looks ugly it still might sell if it is a great performer. Basically an Italian BMW S1000RR. 4. If it is competitively priced and beautiful it will sell like crazy even if it does not offer class-leading performance (although it probably will set new standards). Everyone wants a pretty Duck. I hope it is #4, or at least #2. We will have to wait and see what the finished product is but it already is polarizing on the Ducati boards. So it might be #3, but indications it will be #1.
If I recall, the entire first year's run of the 1098 was "spoken for" before the first production bike landed in the U.S. With that, and considering today's economy, I'm going with either #2 or #4 as well, or a mix of both.
Cool article Wade. I'm gonna miss the trellis frame, single sided swing arm and the underseat exhausts. I like the idea of gear driven cams though.
Rumors are 195HP. Internet pics of the bike make it look tiny,... to the point of many riders (most),... looking too big for the bike. As a track machine for a 130# pro, that may be good,... but for a 23 y/o hoping to put a hottie on the back,... not so sure. http://www.ducati.ms/forums/56-superbikes/121388-1199-panigale-highway.html
http://www.ducati.ms/forums/56-superbikes/121388-1199-panigale-highway.html[/QUOTE] The rider does not look thin . I bet this bike is the reason, KTM dropped $3,500 off the price of the 2011 RC8R and brought in the R bike, as the entry level street model. I hope it is tiny. I will fit . At or around 195hp; this thing will fly.
Supposedly Ducati uses 2 test riders... one petit and one large. If that's the petit one, I'll have to try the Pasta in the Ducati factory cafeteria!
Canadian price from dealer (price in CAD) 19.900$ for the base 1199 24.500$ for the S 25.500$ for the S-ABS 29.500$ for the S-Tricolore Base includes a quickshifter and obviously DTC S will, as usual in the Ducati world, comes with Ohlins forks, TTX shock and some carbon bling. S tricolore will use the same paint scheme as the 1098 S tricolore (or S4RS) and be produced only the first year. For US prices, the best bet is to take a 20k bike in Canada like a Multi 1200 S and check it's price in US.
Multistrada 1200S is $20k in the US. I believe the MSRP of the same model in Canada is $21.5k. So this would seem to confirm the new bike will see a significant price increase over the 1198. Number I saw was $18595 US for the base model. That seems just about right comparing the Canada prices. On the other hand, an 1198 is $20.5k in Canada and $16.5k in the US. So it is tough to say.
I have read by people usually in the know that the 1198/848 will be offered for one more year alongside the 1199. Sort of what they did in 1994 where the 888 and 916 overlapped in showrooms for a short time. So you would have the 848 at $14k, the 1198 at $16.5k, and the "base" 1199 at $19k-ish. By 2013 a smaller version of the new engine could be released for a lower price point.

Looks incredible talk about a huge leap forward in motorcycle technology. 195hp and only 360lbs dry this thing is gonna be a monster. Any idea on the price?
