So DD. Saw Palmetto, or whatever the main ingredient is, is just blowing smoke up my prostate? What, as a seasoned professional, would you suggest those who suffer from prostate enlargement do? Manual massage? One of those real scrips than have 9,000,000 side effects? Or maybe, just get over it and pee a lot? Seriously, my prostate is happy as a clam, my PSA barely registers, but others here might be really interested in the answer. D
As one who is in the number of older folks, most my age know that more than half of men over 60 have an enlarged prostate (termed medically BPH). Similar to other things that "go south" physiologically, the prostate naturally adds cells and becomes larger over time; the bladder muscle becomes larger in response to pushing more forcefully, which adds to sensitivity (not the good kind) in the area. The first, and most critical, thing is to get your prostate checked periodically and not just accept it as a fact of getting older. There are a litany of issues that mimic the problem, some benign and some lethal. Guys tend to ignore things until too late (like a colonoscopy, which you also need to do- colon cancer is 100% preventable if you do it) but you'll drive your Ferrari a lot less after you're dead, so just do it. There are minimally invasive medical procedures, including Alpha blockers (don't relieve the problem, but do alleviate the symptoms), Alpha inhibitors (finasteride) which do relieve the issue, but cause side effects you can discuss with your doctor. There are more invasive means, many of which most folks may know. Re supplements, saw palmetto is commonly used, but has not been shown to have a positive effect. Pygeum bark has been shown to have some positive effects. For prevention (or minimizing symptoms), drink lots of water (in pure form, not liquids) but stop drinking after 6 pm or so to help alleviate the nighttime sojourn to the can. I've noticed a lessening of symptoms following this routine; not painful and a habit that helps a lot more than just your prostate. There is also evidence a high-fiber diet with water is beneficial. Lower your total body weight, lower fat consumption reasonably and ay attention to what your body is telling you (the longstanding advice is sadly true...). Hope this helps, Bob H
Saw palmetto lowers PSA. Saw palmetto does NOT protect against prostate cancer. Saw palmetto makes prostate cancer harder to detect because of artificially lowered PSA. People on saw palmetto often present with higher grade cancers due to delayed diagnosis. You decide. I'm tired of trying to educate people in a purely altruistic manner, they often argue for their "natural" pills. I'm out of this thread.
Now DD. Don't get all defensive. We see this stuff on TV 24/7. You're the only pecker peeker we know, so we ask our dumb ass questions, hoping you'll clear the air. I've never used any homeopathic cures. Don't need them for my nether regions, at least not yet. But I think it's valuable to get your input, and I for one appreciate it. Now, lets move on. Viagra? Cialis? something else, like a 22 year old blond? Which pecker perker upper gives the best results? D
sorry, no intent to draw fire with my post... I'm not a health care pro, but have been a competitive athlete for years & am interested in living healthy and avoiding the reaper for as long as reasonably possible. The first, and best, advice is to listen and respond to what your body may be telling you, find a good doctor and keep a schedule of blood draws, check-ups and attention to possible problems. Guys tend to ignore stuff for way too long, and early intervention almost always results in better outcomes (if the Titanic has turned left one degree leaving Southampton, we'd never have had the books and movies). Re supplements, my experience in the strength world is that people will pretty much take anything you can grind up and put in a capsule, and then religiously swear it is the path to Nirvana. In almost every circumstance, they either do very little, or can (as noted) mask problems by creating others. There is a lot more "vitamin S" used by those who get "great results" than some might imagine. At the same time, having been in the Amazon a couple years ago and seeing how many pharma companies are there testing substances, there's always the possibility we'll find new drugs and remedies that will change the way we treat or prevent prostate and other problems. Back to the advice part, drinking water, eating healthy, persistent aerobic and anaerobic workouts (and a dram of Scotch at least 3x weekly...) helps, but does not prevent, problems there and elsewhere. The only lesson from aging is that it beats the alternative (of not aging); thus our goal should be not to have our health look like a bell curve, but an inverted box (e.g., good health and vigor until our shelf life expires). An added insight, relevant to this thread, is that almost all "new" things are old things repackaged by someone who wants to obtain your money, and who seeks to tap into our unconscious desire to find a short-cut to our desired destinations. OK, done now, best regards, Bob H
I take a saw palmetto pill most days, it doesn't hurt and may have helped. I have read extensively on this subject since a couple bouts of stubborn prostatitis 30 years ago. Most of the stuff I have read on this and other subjects I have forgot the particulars and retain general, pertinent info. I believe we are all prisoners/beneficiaries of our genes. So if you have a family history of p cancer or any other be more vigilant. For me a DRE is what I believe in, done every so often by an experienced pro. The PSA is from what I remember reading been shown in studies and backed by some doc's to be of questionable benefit. GOOGLE it yourself. As for bph, in my reading finasteride is something you want to avoid big time, some of the others too. Many ways to intervene nowadays if necessary with some yielding good results from reading and conversations with folks. Getting old does suck and I would agree with what bob said in his last paragraph. Appreciate your health everyday and try to live life to its fullest.
While i dont take this exact brand i do take something similar and it works. Do you suppose the doctors 100 years from now will look at the doctors of today like we look at the doctors from 100 years past.
