At college in boston we had some ridiculous cars, but they were almost exclusively driven by international students. Some of us Americans drove nice cars, but nothing exotic. I knew of only one american with a 458 on campus while the international crowd ranged from a 599 Alonso to Aston DBS to lp640-sv and tons of GTRs. Also had a lot of matte wrapped range rovers and G wagons

Buying a child a fancy car, no matter your income, is dumb.

I mildly disagree w/ the above. If your child is mature enough, regardless of age, and are doing well enough in their studies and it is commensurate with what their parents can afford, why not?…T

Being over-confident is just as dangerous as being under-skilled.

I feel this has always been like that. The Raptors being the only exception but an E39 M5 isn't the priciest nor is an older CTS-V. In my highschool we had a kid with a Ferrari 360, daddy made big bucks! I also had friends who had a brand new Mustang ($$$) and a newish Audi A4. Some people just save & make money earlier but it does help to have money from the folks.

If my math serves correct you can make about 5-8g a summer. No expenses combined with previous savings you easily have a nice deposit for a loan If you only worked one summer.

The real crazy stuff starts in College depending on where you go. Big school's in Canada and the U.S have some mind boggling stuff. Vancouver is known for INTL students driving Aventadors and what not.

I grew up in the 70's in Detroit. People drove 454 chevelles, hemi cuda, 454 corvettes, Gto's you name it. One kid had a red super bird. Nowadays all those cars are worth a fortune. I wonder how many of those kids could afford those cars today?

Case in point...friends of mine had their BMW 550i delivered in South Africa a few years ago. Because of the optional paint it took a long time before this car finally was delivered (I think a 9 month wait all in). Parents didn't have the time to pick the car up so their young son got to drive the car the first time and deliver it 500km away.

Not all kids are idiots. Not all adults know when to behave.

But why burden them with a super nice vehicle. There is not a 16-year-old alive that can handle the resentment and jealousy that can be attached to driving one. Remember, they live in a world of other teenagers.

For that matter, there are many adults that have difficulty in these matters. At least once a quarter there is a thread about buying a Ferrari but then hiding it from co-workers or clients.

My thought the perfect vehicle for a teen would be a newish, safe, reliable car or truck (new Scion FR-S for a sporty car, Jeep Cherokee for SUV, a basic small truck if they want a pickup). I think some of the motivation to buy the kid a Z06 or G550 says more about the parents than the kids, as they are an extension of themselves and proving they can "one up" other parents.

Currently, the 2014/5 Raptor is rated at 365bhp (and 420 foot pounds for torque), I believe. If your son is 4, and we're talking about what he'll be driving in 10 or more years. I'd believe that bhp and torque figures will only go up, so you may be talking about something far more powerful at that point. Unless you're talking about a 10+ year old used truck as his first car. Which you may be.

Regardless, I'm sure you'll consider the options when the time comes.

But, once I had gone through Skip, I felt pretty comfortable at elevated speeds and confident in my abilities. Maybe too comfortable and confident at times.

I currently am rocking '79 F250. Nothing special but it has some character. I'm only 15 so it's in just to get me to and from school.

In the immediate future, I'd like to upgrade to maybe an R32 GTR or Bullit or Mach 1 Mustang. Later on in life, however, I have my eye on many things... :)

I go to Creighton Prep in Omaha for those of you wondering.

Wow... can't believe I messed that up.

Hey Parker...Was afraid us old farts (OK, I'm one; should not speak for others!) had scared you off with our spelling corrections and such. :)

Nice eye for cars. Can't go wrong following Steve McQueen's lead in cars. Don't forget, McQueen also had an eye for "those red Italian things". Stay safe on the roads and good luck in school...T

A classmate of mine drove a black Porsche 944 Turbo. Of course, she parked it on the street for all to see, not the school parking lot. I graduated in 1992.

I was a proud driver of a red Ford Escort at the time.

Sweet! My first car was a '95 Ford Escort GT. It was a real hooptie later in life, but I loved that little bugger. Owned it until a few years ago, but finally has to donate it to a local charity (Texas summer + no AC = heat prostration). Hope some HS kid is enjoying it, or its parts have helped someone else's ride live on...T

Mine was a "Pony" model. Total piece of ****. AM radio and 4-speed manual. Of course, I souped it up with a Kenwood tape deck. I think the car was "motivating" to say the least. I didn't want to keep driving pieces of ****.

Kid in my graduating class had a new 944 for his junior year. When he got tired of it, he intentionally blew it up (over redline for several minutes in second gear) so his dad would buy him something else. Ended up with a new Pontiac Trans Am if I recall correctly (this would have been about '88).

Another girl in my class had a 300ZX Turbo. Really nice car at the time, but her parents were not wealthy. Their rationale was that she could find a rich boyfriend, attracting a certain "class" of guy.

That sounds like a typical woman. Always looking for a pay day. Though I have to admit my own sister has done it the last 30 years and done quite well. She is on her third husband and keeps trading up.
