Just FYI, I spent a couple months trying to get my '99 Diablo smogged. The problem was the new ESP Gen3 System1 smog testing machines were saying they couldn't connect to my ODB port.

It tested successfully on a previous version of this same machine but last year they updated them and are obsoleting the old version so everyone is or will upgrade to the new version to do smog testing. This new version has some kind of bug where it can't read the ODB port on the '99 Lamborghinis. Almost every location that does CA smog testing uses these machines.

I was able to run through a test on two other types of smog test machines and all handheld and other ODB machines tested fine through the port. I tried testing on multiple ESP machines and they all failed in the same manner.

I ended up going to a CA smog referee station and they had an ESP machine they tested with and it had the same problem. They said they'd get back to me. They didn't get back to me. When I eventually contacted them (via contacting the state smog people), they said it was Lamborghini's problem (or my problem) to fix.

A few years ago, the CA smog test was updated to require some new monitor to be set on the ODB information of all cars and the older Lamborghinis weren't setting that monitor. Lamborghini needed to fix that and mine did go through a software update to fix that. That was a different problem. That failure showed up during a test but this failure wasn't during a test, it was a failure to connect to the ODB port at all. It failed before the test could start. It seemed to indicate the port didn't have power but it did (tested with unpowered ODB testers and also with a voltmeter).

I called the Opus company that makes the machines and spent a couple hours going from person to person and getting stuck on hold. They said they'd call back and didn't.

So, I contacted them via email and someone from the company responded. After brief correspondence, they sent a software update to a single smog testing location in Gilroy and two '99 diablos were tested there and both were able to connect and mine passed.

I'm guessing this issue isn't limited to '99 Lamboghinis so if you smog test and it can't connect to the ODB port, your test location might need a software update from the Opus/ESP test machine company. I sent an email asking them when they were going to roll out the update to the rest of their locations and never got a reply.

Interesting, seems like the Opus company that should have implemented their software update on their products failed to do exactly that...

Crazy that we are also going through the same issue and performed the same steps as you had short of contacting the smog tester company. Can you please let use know the location that now has the updated smog program so we can finally get the car smog.
