From: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/95629 Marco Simoncelli, one of the most exiting (and controversial) riders to come into Moto GP in recent years has died from injuries sustained in an horrific crash in Malaysia this morning. On lap two of the race his bike slid out from underneath him whilst negotiating a right hander and started to slid out to the left of the track. As it was sliding Marco tried to push the bike back upright but this made the tyres grip again and pushed him back across the track and into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. Edwards hit Simoncelli and his bike full force and then Rossi hit Simoncelli whilst being hit by Edwards, during all of which Simoncelli's helmet was ripped off. (Both Edwards and Rossi had no where to go during this incident I should add!) Rossi was okay but Colin Edwards suffered a dislocated shoulder. Simoncelli was taken to the medical centre and was fighting for his life as the race was cancelled but eventually succumbed to his injuries. Having watched it live I have to say I'm quite shocked and upset, Simoncelli was a great character, especially with his crazy hair!. R.I.P: MARCO
watch the race live and seeing he lose his helmet in the accident i have a bad feeling about it RIP marco, crazy exciting rider
Horrible!! Motorcycle racing will never become as safe as car racing, first and foremost F1... yet it still amazes me how few of these tragic incidents actually happen.
Just watched the video replay...... WOW. That is absolutely a terrible set of circumstances that led to that crash. Simoncelli didn't really have a chance of survival the way both bikes hit him. I went through a couple nasty wrecks during my days of riding/racing but never anything like this. RIP to an amazing up and coming MotoGP star!
Makes me sad that I stopped following MotoGP a few years ago when I stopped riding myself (didn't want the temptation). Everything I am reading about him says he was a great rider and brought so much passion and excitement into each race. I never got to see him race and feel that I missed something special. Again, RIP.
I´m very sad. After Vale, Sic was my favourite MotoGp Rider. Old school rider like Edwards and Valentino. Horrible accident. Very sad. Forza Sic!!! RIP
I switched over to SPEED this morning around 6:30am and had to double take as the news flashed across the screen and I was going to watch the rerun this afternoon. I do not follow MotoGP as much as I would like but I did like Simoncelli. Two straight weekends of tragic loss's in motorsports and I almost mentioned last week that such things come in pairs but did not want to jinx it.
He was such a blast to watch. He had some of the most impressive and ballsiest passes on a bike i've seen in a long time. I have no doubt that he would've gotten a world title within the next few years. Rest in peace, Marco.
Terrible. Generally when helmets come off, they have been fitted too loosely. But, I suspect he was fitted by the helmet manufacturer so it probably was the huge impact. Art
Horrible accident, I hope that both Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi walk away now. Nothing left to prove. RIP Marco, you left us too soon
I just watched the incident, looks like it was a big impact in just the right direction to knock his helmet loose. nasty crash. RIP Marco what a terrible week for racing.
RIP Marco Simoncelli. This is actually major racing loss #3 this year. Hopefully this is it for a long while...
