    i was told recently by a guy who lives there that the law was soon going to change for allowing older cars to run there. apparently cars older than 15 years would not be allowed to have a license. is this true? anybody have an older ferrari they might like to sell me?

    It's not true. It was submitted but if it passes, there would be categories. It's to avoid 1989 datsuns with patani drivers to cause accidents or sth.

    Ross, don't forget... this is the Middle East... all things are possible if you know the right person. By the same token, many things can seem impossible UNLESS you know the right person...

    It's called "Wasta"

    I'm hoping Salman has lots of it in case the Kuwaiti's decide not to allow registration of cars more than 10 years old...:D:D:D

    Hi all. Only just noticed there was a Middle East section on Ferrari Chat.

    The new rules on old cars are being pushed through despite being completely stupid. I'm a motoring journo based in Dubai and wrote an article in Car Magazine on all this mess and basically its being done to help the big families in the UAE (who own all the main dealers) to sell more new cars.

    I even wrote to Greenpeace who said they doubted an old car ban would help the environment, which is the argument being put forward by the authorities. But then, when has anyone in this country ever listened to people with years of experience? My fifteen year old Ferrari is looking a bit worried, as there has been no reports that ANY cars will be exempt, despite what the Dubai Porsche Club seem to be claiming.

    The Patans will simply not bother to register their cars. They earn so little they cannot afford a new one, so will simply break the law. Dubai Police never seem to pull anyone over anyway, so I guess that makes sense for them.

    The rule is due to drop from 20 years to 15 at the end of next year. What a joke!

    You don't want to breath Carbon dioxide in a humid place trust me.

    Chances are older cars can be registered as collectors(exotics), there are a lot there.

    Okay... The enforcement of that needs clarification. I.E. there must be exemptions on the 20 (then 15) yr old rule, as well as on the 5 year old one. I want to import a 355 or a 3200??? what do i do?

    Yes, at least that is what I heard from the Abu Dhabi Classic Car Club's Treasurer a few days ago. All official info states "postponed indefinately" though;

    Ah, OK.

    Just asked because I come from NZ. A lot of secondhand cars from Japan go there. They have similar rules. After about 5 years(???) the cost of registering the cars is higher than buying a new one. I think the average age of a car in NZ went from around 15 years to less than 10 years in a very short period of time due to Japanese car imports.
