    Hi,

On a '73 US Daytona here, it has Cromodora mag wheels (attached photo). Could you please tell me if this is correct and/or mainly is it acceptable for judging, or if they're supposed to be Borrani wire wheels, etc?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Cromodora 7.5X15" are the standard wheels. Borranis were an option. I suspect there are rather more Daytonas on Borranis today than were first delivered with them.

Cars delivered to USA and Germany had hex nuts. Attached is a photo showing what I believe are the two correct styles; one with Cavallino for Cromodora and the other for Borrani.

hex nut is NOT correct, don't remember anything other than 8 sided

which is it going to be ??? 6 or 8 sided... in your text you say hex which is 6 sided yet the photo shows 8 sided nuts... :=)

the correct nut is 8 sided... if going with correct text would be an "octo" nut or whatever is correct for 8 sided nut

First, I think they are called OCTAGON (8-sided) nuts.
Can't be 100% certain since I wasn't there when they all rolled out of factory gates, but IF I was judging and noticed Borrani-logo nuts on Cromodoras, I'd probably want to see additional documentation.

:) , but are you sure your ratchet is big enough to break the nut loose, even if it's just 6-sided ?

    That looks hex to me.
Some sort of deep comp knock ons for 9'' + wheels maybe.

This topic is discussed in an episode of Chasing Classic Cars titled "Green is the New Black" (Season 6, Episode 10). After a restoration, a Daytona had points deducted at Cavallino due to the wrong knock-offs. In that case they used eared knock offs (that appeared to be from a Boxer), but in a post-judging discussion, they discuss the proper ones.

Here is the stuff that Borrani currently make for the Daytona Borranni wheels and spinners They currently only make spinners to go with the Borrani wheels. It is also quite complicated, so if you need to know more about the Borrani wheels and spinners i suggest you give us a call and speak to Simon, he is our in house Borrani nerd.

To the OP's point, I think wires on a Daytona are going to exhibit stress failure, eventually.
That's a lot of horsepower to put thru them.

The US DOT at some point in the '70s took a dim view of the spinner ears, I think it was after the Ben Hur chariot race scene.

At that point all of the manufacturers had to rethink the hardware, giving rise to the HUGE nuts.

Either configuration you need a huge wrench and socket to work them as on the 512BB, and later the TRs....

    HTH.

The 512BB and BBi, making no effort to please our DOT, ran the eared knock offs a bit longer....
