Bonhams, Gooding and RM Sothebys have worked hard since Amelia Island to secure and market various consignments and both have had several major announcements and while there is more to come, its an ideal time to begin discussion of what proposes to be one of the biggest years yet seen.

RM Sothebys are now offering three full days of sales beginning Thursday August 15th with a one day Aston Martin sale and two days of the best the auto world has to offer. If the consignments already announced arre anything to go by, RM Sothebys will continue to dominate the other auction houses.

www.autoauctionsmonthly.com will have full coverage of all lots, sales and news from the various auctions as it comes to hand.

I'm told Russo and Steele are still on for Monterey, though they are currently in the midst of two lawsuits (as plaintiffs) and no featured cars are yet disclosed. Worldwide also lists a Monterey auction on their website this year, but no featured lots are listed yet.

Worldwide announced last night they would offer THE 1898 Riker Electric which raced in both the USA and Europe before the end of the 19th century along with a Gordini D46 Monoposto and a 1930s Cadillac as their highlights. Nothing as yet from R&S and Rick Cole.

Apparently Mecum will run Dana's own 250 Monza s/n 0432M across the block in Monterey.

I saw this yesterday (and Dana's GT40 #GT/109), gotta be tricky selling your own cars, cos what if it stalls at $10 mil against a $15 million estimate. Looks pretty poor for your abilities as an auctioneer and auction house and marketing and on and on. So do you take the lower amount or do you take the failure, either look bad. Its not like he can work over the seller so its a tricky position Dana will put himself in and the GT40 already ran through Indy in January where it failed to sell at a reported $9.5 million against an undisclosed estimate so there is form. Will be fascinating to see.

The 250 Monza was a 750 Monza chassis fitted with a 250MM engine so effectively previewing the 250 Testa Rossa which used the 500TR chassis and the 300bhp engine as successfully used in 250GT Tour de France #0677GT by Gendebien to finish 3rd in the '57 Mille Miglia. Testa Rossa parallels don't stop there, this car, #0432M, was rebuilt by Scaglietti with Pontoon coachwork before sale to Luigi Chinetti so the poor mans 250 Testa Rossa will likely be a great point of marketing. One could either see the 250 Testa Rossa analogies or see it as a gussied up 750 Monza but its worth what $15, 20, 25 million or ?

An even tougher sell on the GT40 Roadster...there's a second one available at RM Sotheby's, GT/108. It was listed for a short while yesterday but seems to be down now.

Five GT40 Roadsters were built, GT40/110 was redone as the famed McLaren developed X-1 and after winning Sebring '66 in 427 cui Mark II form, scrapped. GT/112 was a Coupe but has been restored as a Roadster, as has GT/111 discovered as a bare chassis, leaving us with four of the five Roadsters still in existence. GT/108 has no racing history per se but is a very pure car, the only pure Roadster extant whereas GT/109 was modified by Shelby for Le Mans '65 (DNF with a broken gearbox on lap 11) and later by famed Californian hot rodder Dean Jeffries before its restoration by Dana Mecum/ Harley Cluxton. So is purity more valuable than a Le Mans competition history?

Very interesting! I'm curious what the market decides. Sounds like the Mecum car was already a tough sell at whatever the reserve was, so I cant see it selling in Monterey. I'd take purity over a DNF at Le Mans any day personally.

Its a tough one because most successful racing cars end up losing their originality. Its part and parcel of who they are. They can sell both the 250 Monza and Ford GT40 if they want, remains to be seen how much do they want to sell them versus holding out for a better result. The market is not that far off the peak of five years ago, this is Monterey so every capable buyer will see it, so unless they flog it through RM or maybe Goodings (which they cannot do) they wont see a better result than whatever high bid they manage to get.

As a worthy couple of comparisons $8 million in 2012 would have bought

a Ferrari 250GT California SWB, 250GT SWB Competizione, the best Bentley Blower extant, two 500TRCs or a nice Bugatti Type 57S. While most of the comparpo's haven't doubled in value, the California SWB has basically doubled while the Comp. spec. 250 SWB has increased by 50% etc. A ready argument could be made for a $15 - 18 estimate for the 250 Monza. Will be fascinating to see what Mecums crystal ball comes up with. ;)

Agree, he has a 330GTC and a Daytona that are "frequent flyers" at the Mecum auctions and never sell through.
