Of the current Mondial/328/308 owners on this forum, how many purchased their car from a private seller? eBay? authorized Ferrari dealer? general exotic car dealer?

Also, how many had to travel (further than a 6 hour drive) to find and buy the car?

I flew (and returned the same day) from St. Louis to Salt Lake city to check out a 328 and eventually bought it from Steve Harris Imports.

Do not hesitate to travel to get a good car.

I bought mine from a fellow Fchatter sight unseen. I am in CA and it was in AL. I had a mini PPI done on it, but relied on the PPI the seller had done 7 months ago. The seller was also good at documenting everything he did to it, or any problems it had, here on Fchat. Fchat was a blog for the car. Thanks Fchat!

Drove seven hours to look at the car from a private seller, put a deposit down, and returned home same day.

Transferred the funds and drove back down two weeks later to get it. Drove the Ferrari back while the wife followed in the other car.

It was tiring, but worth it.

1982 Mondial. Purchased from an individual in Los Angles with no PPI (learned a lesson there). I flew there from Raleigh, NC and drove it back, approx 2500 miles.

The seller was not completely accurate to me in his mechanical assesment of the car but when I got to LA I decided I could live with the car as it was (the price was very reasonable).

bought my 308 GT4 from off of ebay sight unseen in march 05. The car was in san jose, and I'm in Houston Made him an offer and he shut down the auction. The car had an extensive PPI a couple years ago and had a bunch of receipts for the major work. It wasn't a concours and I've had a few relatively small issues, but all and all I'm satisifed, I've got a very cool car at less than the cost of a new honda accord.

I bought mine from a local independent exotic car dealer 3 days after Ferrari Of Dallas blew me off. It was on consignment from another local Fchatter, and the car was originally sold new in Dallas. No PPI, but my mechanic knew the car and gave it a thumbs-up.

I'm in Portland, Oregon, and I bought mine from a private seller in New York City. I was the top bidder on Ebay, but didn't meet his reserve price - twice! Finally talked him down to the price I wanted, sent him the money, then flew out there and drove the car home from New York! Awesome trip.

So I bought the car sight unseen, but I had a million pictures and all the maintenance records. Talked to the previous owner, the dealership that maintained it, the mechanics in Arizona that rebuilt the engine a few years ago, and the detail shop that cleaned it up for the Ebay sale.

    1. 308 purchased from Ferrari of Central Florida in Orlando where I grew up when I was visiting from New Mexico... Shipped to New Mexico.

    2. 328 purchased from a private seller in Walnut Creek, California (near Oakland / San Francisco), while I was living in New Mexico. I flew out on a free Southwest Airlines ticket, inspected it, bought it, flew back. If I knew then the car was going to be perfect, I would have driven it back! In this particular case I had it shipped back to New Mexico, and later drove it up to Denver (where I live now).

Bottom line, if you want an above average car, you better be ready to travel. Chances are the one you'll find locally would not be your 1st choice when you expand your search nationally!

I bought my '85' Euro 308 GTS QV from a private seller in Atlanta. I had seen the car on Ebay but it had not sold. So, I went to Atlanta (2 1/2 hour drive)and drove the car but did not make an offer, just drove back home to Birmingham. About 2 weeks later the seller called and we came to an agreed price. Then a friend drove me over again and I drove it home.
