Lost linkage cover

Had Red's rear end up, wiping her down a bit when I noticed an exposed part that I did not think should be exposed. I remember that it had a cover and I had the pictures to prove it from the last service it had. It's an '89 t Cab #82511

Question is, how necessary/important is it to have it covered. Should I be driving without it?
