When we got my girlfriends mazda3 I called a few various dealers within a couple hours drive and basically told them flat out that I wasn't a local buyer, but wouldn't mind driving a few hours for a better price and an easy in/out transaction and for them to fax me their best price. I then took the faxed price over to my local Mazda dealer and with very little discussion, they beat the price. 4k off of a new 2010 last October. I think I did pretty well for my first new car purchase.

Bought a Black/blueish SV AWD. A little over the $26k when all said and done. She loves it.

Congrats! Her loving it is the most important thing...a happy wife is a happy husband. :D

Disappointingly the car mags disagree...slow and crappy steering...all show and no go. :(

As mentioned above the auto scribes agree with you. The turbo has been confirmed for the near future but I don't believe a price or hp have been announced. Hopefully a "base" turbo will still be under $20K.

Of course since the plan is whatever I buy in the short term becomes my oldest son's first car in a few years being slow may not be a bad thing.

Yes. The one i wanted would have been MSRP $23,600 (Tech and Design packages). So a little cheaper than the Juke but with 40hp less and FWD only vs AWD. I like how the Veloster looks in and out but everytime i press the pedal, nothing happened. I felt like i was driving a car running on 3 cylinders. 140hp SHOULD NOT be this sluggish.

Veloster, is the more fun drive as a stick, don't know about the auto, the juke is gonna give a better kick in the pants. Real world mileage wise, the gap would be smaller than you think, I'm a nissan fan but if it were my choice I would take the veloster. As far as how long they would hold, the veloster would have less expensive maintenence on the long run(no turbo to rebuild), but reliability wise I would say they are both solid, Nissan has a history of building really robust turbo engines(I would know about that one), and hyundais cars have come a long way recently. Out of the 2 I would pick the veloster, my advice, drive both, then pick the one you like more.

Disregard, Enjoy the Juke, I didn't know about the markups, this is unnerving since I was considering a veloster for my daily driver.

If you can wait a few months I'm sure the deals will improve as the newness wears off and the availability increases.

I drove the Veloster in Auto only and was really disappointed. I wanted to buy the Veloster originally but i couldnt believe how slow it was when pressing the pedal down. Nothing happened...it revved but the car simply didnt move. It's a great looking car, i love the ext/int and the price wasnt a problem (eventhough a markup for a Hyundai is BS!), in the end it was too sluggish to buy. Even my wife who is far from a car expert noticed it..and she used to drive a 160k miles Celica when i met her.
