A group of friends and I are planning a road trip around Italy late summer. Part of the trip will include the Mille Miglia route and we would like to hire a Ferrari 458, or similar for this part. I have come across a few companies offering this service, but I am seeking recommendations or advice if anyone can offer any? Also any advice regarding any not-to-miss sites along the way and restaurant/accommodation recommendations welcome too.

The Mille Miglia covers almost all of Italy between Brescia & Rome so thats a lot of recommendations http://www.1000miglia.eu/inglese/home.html

Having said that lots of individual places may have been previously mentioned so when you know where you might be near you could try putting the place names into 'search' here

Thanks for that, I know it is a long route, I am basically interested if there are any highlights that are not to be missed so that we can plan around them.

Can't tell you any highlights, but I was looking into renting a Ferrari a while ago and got quotes from a few companies. I remember there were a few worth investigating - Elite are the obvious choice as they are so well known, and then Europe Luxury Car Hire were a specialist company I came across were pretty efficient and there was also Autoeurope, who don't specialise but do have luxury cars for rent and gave me a good quote.

Sounds like a great trip, any special occasion?

I have come across Elite and am waiting for a quote from them. I'll check out the other two though, thanks.

The occasion is that one of us is turning 50, one is retiring and I fancy a holiday.

So things are looking good, Auto Toscana can do the 458 for €1800 per day. The Europe Luxury Car guys can hire us a 458, or a limited edition 360 Spider Cabriolet from any location in Italy also starting at €1800 per day. But they also have a beautiful Limited Edition 458 Italia Oakley which would apparently be available - there are only 10 of them in the world!! At €3500 a day, I fear it may be pushing it a bit but I could be tempted! So things are starting to take shape - we are definitely going to visit the Mille Miglia Museum and now I am starting to look for quality places to stay along the route.

Good old Clarkson - the steering wheel does look a bit strange seeing as all the controls move with the wheel - it would be awesome to drive one of those, I am still tempted!!

I would love to see pics of the drive.
I'd love to be in Italy. It's a weird thing that even though I was born, raised and live in Canada. I feel completely at home in Italy. I guess that's what happens when you're a child of Italian immigrants ;)

I had a 328GTS in Italy for four years and did a lot of driving. If you can I would recommend waiting until the Fall to go.Like much of Europe everyone goes on vacation in August and the resorts, hotels and popular towns are jammed. The weather is cooler also in September and October. There are two guide books you want to get, the Michelin Green[sightseeing] and Red [hotels and restaurants}. Over the years there have been several routes for the M.M. Get the toad maps for central Italy. Like the guide books all these are available thru Amazon. Then useing these plot your route and a rough schedule. If you go in the Fall and don't want a specific schedule you can reserve your hotels as you go along. Just go to the front desk of the hotel where you are and they will call ahead and reserve the next hotel.Give them several choices out of the Red guide which gives rates phone numbers and general info and stars on hotels. The Red guide also rates restaurents with their famous X forks and spoons. One more thing. Stick to the speed limits in the towns. Once out of town let her rip.Italian country roads are made for fast driving. You will find each road has sort of a soul. And where ever you go in Italy with a Ferrari you create a lot of interest. One of my favorates was the little kid saying" Look Dady a Ferrari. Yes son look but don't touch". just one man's opinion tongascrew
