The reason Mecum owns and auctions these Ferraris is not to sell them. It brings an audience. The Ferraris won't sell for bargain prices. But those that are attracted by the "Stars" of the show are now looking at anything else. I had a close friend that called me saying that he thinks that the 275 GTB at Mecum might be bought for a deal since Mecum isn't RM or Gooding. I told him before the auction that Mecum isn't selling the Ferrari. But he will sell you something you were not looking for. A few days after the auction I asked my friend if he bought anything. Sure enough he bought a Vette he wasn't looking for. Yup...and I could confidently say "I told you so"!

    It's called Marketing 101.

After 35+ years of peanut gallery observations, I’m pretty convinced Mecum is far from only auction house resorting to this, although most don’t necessarily own all the “Headline”, “Star” or other “crowd bait” cars not actually expected/intended to sell (but are often put through smoke’n’mirrors motions just for the sake of appearances).
