I have seen that prototype before at Crystal Cove...Pretty interesting.

My family owns two new Hyundais. We bought them both as commuter cars since my mom and dad each drive just under 100 miles a day at least. They really aren't bad cars at all! Every once in a while I take one of them out for a spin instead of the Mustang if I really dont feel like shifting gears.

The Tiburon is a good low price car. You can't road race it all day or you'll cook the brakes and overheat the engine, just like any "cheaper" car. But it's nice looking with a good interior and fair motor for the size and price.

    LAFun2,

Korean cars are going through exactly the same life cycle as the Japanese cars. Thus currently they are offering cheap cars with all the gimmicks ... just like Toyota did 30+ years ago ... I remember.

The quality will improve as it did for the Japanese and they will move from gimmicks to real engineering, if they keep making money.

When you start making something you have to have the sales points ... er, gimmicks to move the products. Not all people that buy cars are into the engineering side like we are, so as long as it moves, has all the features and can get the young girl, etc. to the night club ... all is cool.

Once you are estabished you start investing in building the reliability reputation ... Hyundai are definitely doing this as they are miles better cars than KIAs and Daewoos.

I have driven older Hyundais that were far more fun to drive than I ever expected ... far better than an old Holden (GM) or Ford.

Would I buy one ... not yet, they need atleast 5 years more maturing before I'd consider them.

We have to remember that most manufacturers have been around for ages ... thus the ones like Mitsibushi, GM + Vauxhall, Ford, Italian products for reliability are the ones we really should be slagging off, because they did their life cycle 50 years ago and still make dodgy cars ... especially Mitsi.

I respect Hyundai ... they are on the right track. I do not respect Mitsi and GM cause they always make crap and always will.

    Pete

    Neil you are right,

All the hours I spent racing my Lexus or my other cheap honda products, the engine starts over heating.

Low quality cars overheat. It has nothing to do with price.

    Pete,

Very valid points. However, if you look at the discussion, we are talking about the Tiburon of today. In 2045, it might be possible that even American car makers will make good cars. Alas, anything is possilbe that many years down the line. Will Hyundai be the Toyota of 2050? Possibly. BUt in 2004, I will take a 84 toyota/honda over any Korean products.

Koreans might make good Barbie or GI Joe, but they are not making good cars yet.

Thus, I stick to my earlier comments about them being $hitboxes.

I did read the part about where you said you would buy in 5 years. That is my point exactly. The thread is about the Tiburon today. Maybe its me, but I don't like paying for crap products from manufacturers today, that MIGHT improve in quality in 5 years. Then again, I am not rich enough to change new cars I buy every year. I like to think that I can drive it 200K trouble free miles, and the Hyundais are nowhere near there imho.

If you lease cars, maybe the hyundai is a great car.

    Agree with the aussi/usa comment.

i just had to post for LAFun2 on this one.........a neighbor of mine had an old hyundai excel, it had 250,000 miles on it before she sold it, only having to replace the cats twice, no other work done than standard stuff.

also, whoever said old hyundais are better than old fords, you're a bit off. old hyundais ARE old fords. the hyundai pony was a rebadged ford escort.
most of the reliability thing is because hyundai never used their own technology. early to late 90s hyundai transmissions sucked horribly, but that's because they used mitsubishi transmissions that blow every 60k. now, hyundai's making it's own stuff, like the 2.0L Beta engine, the 2.7L Delta (which sucked since it was just a weak bored out 2.5L engine), and better yet, the two engines coming out, the I4 Theta which will be used by chrysler and mitsubishi, put out fairly impressive number, and also, the 3.3L V6 Lambda in the 2006 sonata, rumored to have 220 HP and upwards of 230 tq.

and as for those concept pics, it's the HCD-8. rumors are it'll be the tiburon in 07-08, which isn't too farfetched, seeing as how the HCD-3 (i think that was the number) was the basis for the 1st gen (97-99) tiburon.

the cool thing about these cars are that they can be completely customized to be unlike any other car on the road. these are the plans for my car, not bad for $2000 beyond the purchase price, i dare you to show me a better looking car for 20,000 (bought mine for 17,500).

The preludes are ugly IMO but I will agree with you that the Veilside tib above is a bit ricey for me too. There are about 20 other non-ricey kits out there to choose from though.

Here is one of my favorites, very clean and far from rice. This kit is similar to mine but is not the wide body

well that is your opinion and you are more than entitled to it, however, this really isnt a "ricey" car, no giant spoiler/deckals/racing stripes etc. this one has nice clean lines and more of an italian design with smooth flowing lines than that prelude. i guess you could call it "pasta-y" or "olivey" heh heh heh.

well the thing is, the whole "my car is better looking" argument is pointless as looks are subjective.

however, any car with a veilside kit and altezzas is ricey. i will agree with that. :)

No. Not italian at all. Looks like every other car I see that has been pimped out. No wing and no stickers yes...

but still with a ugly front valance, no point side skirts and chrome wheels.

Do not call such a car Italian on a Ferrarisite.

well in stock form, it WOULD look italian as Pininfarina did have a hand in designing it (which i knew since 2001, i've been around the scene a while), however, that specific one is quite riced out.
