I'm really considering a 400i 5-speed within the next 3-9 months. I've found a few that I'm interested in, although it's amazing the number with brown or tan interiors. I even found one with a complete red interior (no thanks) although one I am looking at is silver on black/red, which is decent enough, although I always prefer black interiors.

But, I have yet to find a single one, auto or 5-speed, that has a sunroof. I've *HEARD* of them (via this forum) but have never seen one.

Does anyone have any idea on just how rare a factory sunroof is on the 400i?

Maybe a 5-speed, sunroofed 400i in a decent color combination is a needle in a haystack.

I have a list of 400's, 400i's, & 412's in the US. The total of these cars imported to the US is around 200.
Of those 200 or so, I know of less than 5 US cars that had factory sunroofs installed. My 1980 black on black 400i is one of them.

If owning a 400 series car is your goal, but a factory sunroof is a requirement, I'd say you're going to be looking a very long time.

Yours was the one I was noting from this forum that had a sunroof. Your car a 5-speed?

    Care to share that list?

Have personaly had 5 400's and all but one had a sunroof, maybe the US spec car had a cost sunroof option and in the UK a none cost option (or could just be more people over here wanted the sunroof for the 2 days a year it can be opened)

    Sunroof? Yes.
    Factory sunroof? NO.

Its an aftermarket installation. The factory sunroofs were steel panel. That car has a glass panel. Its probably an ASC, Webasto, or Hollandia sunroof.

bj; my car is an automatic (I just had a complete rebuild done on the tranny)

400i serial number 43123 is a 1983 black/tan auto that was for sale in California in October of 2005. It has a sunroof.

Sorry but I don't have any contact info.

Thanks Adrian! That is a good color combo..(black dash and console at least.) Sunroof is plain to see it is open during the pictures.

Too bad it's an automatic. *sigh*.

    Out of 1,308 400i cars made from 1979 through February 1985, only 424 are 5 speed. Stateside at least, the factory sunroof is very rare, I think I've seen a handful. The only 5 speed with a sunroof I've seen is s/n 31097, a 1980 Blue/Cream with an ASC sunroof. S/N 31243 is a 1980 automatic Black/black (Dave's) and there is 1984 s/n 53901, a White/Tan automatic with a factory sunroof.

So you have found a 5-speed in silver with black/red for sale? Do you have any more details (website/price/condition)?

I came really close to buying the brown/tan (much nicer in the flesh than it sounds) 5-spd 400i from Peter Sweeney at Forza, but it was sold on eBay the day after I tested it (I didn't know it was up on eBay!).

    BJ,

Back in the 80's I worked for ASC in both the sunroof & McLaren division.
I thought I'd give you some pointers to help you identify the various sunroofs/moonroofs that are out there.

If the sunroof panel is glass, you know it is aftermarket installed.
If it is a steel panel but there is a trim ring or reveal molding affixed to the roof opening (not the panel), you know it is an aftermerket installation.
Another "tell-tale" sign of an aftermarket installation is if the front edge of the panel has a pronounced "sweep" or curved edge.

A factory installed unit would have a "rectangular" steel panel, no reveal molding, & front mounted motor.

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to get a picture of the inside, but here is a picture of the outside of mine.

Did you get the serial number and mileage, by any chance? It's no longer on the website.

    Thanks,

It never was on their website. Mileage (as noted by the photo of the odometer they sent me) was 71k or so. (higher miles, but also you know it's been driven..which is what I am going to do with any 400i I buy)

I didn't grab the serial number.....although I did ask for a photo of the doorjamb tag. I didn't get it.

Going back over emails, it seems the original ad said the car had 4 previous owners....just had a "yearly service" (whatever that means. <grin>), and has records. I was going to visit the car the end of last month, but never made it. If I make it down there, I'll certainly go take a look.

Looks nice - they look great in grigio, too. The leather seems to be in good condition.

It has 412i indicators (white lenses); the passenger door looks a different colour (lighter) from the other panels.

I'd be interested in your thoughts if you go and take a look at the car.

Passenger door looks like the reflection from the white building behind. I've looked closely at it. Looks to be the same color.

I'll certainly comment on the car if I can make it down south...

Yeah..I noticed the 412 indicators. I really like that. I also like the fact that they didn't cut the sheet metal for the front side markers. I also like the yellow fog lamps. The grille looks slightly bent, not sure if that's true or not.

Otherwise, the car looks decent in the pics. I'd really like to make it down there.

Given the miles, what does everyone think a decent offer price is?

I looked at the white building reflected in the door and it seems to be lighter than the reflection on the wing. I hope it was just an optical illusion.

The price seems reasonable for a 5-spd, although it would depend on the service history and condition of the exhaust, clutch, rear shock absorbers, etc., as I understand these are hideously expensive to replace. Does it have EPA/DoT papers?

Doesn't say much: "Grigio titanium with red leather. California titled and licensed. Four owners. 70,200 miles. $24,900" Excerpted from Ferrari Market Letter V 31 N 7 April 8, 2006

The car is desirable with the 5 speed and looks to be in reasonable cosmetic shape. With 70K miles and no mention of any kind of service history, the value of a thorough and proper pre-purchase inspection cannot be overstated.
