Alright, you have 10K and you have to buy a used car and it must be bone stock! (I know this leaves a lot of gray area but lets be realistic on prices = Kelley's Blue Book Avg.)

What would be the fastest car around Road Atlanta (or insert your track of choice that isn't too tight)?

Added curiousity: What is the fastest top speed you could get out of a 10K dollar car bone stock.

(Don't worry, this is strictly hypothetical as I don't even have $0.10 to spend on car right now)

Surprisingly a LS1 Camaro/TransAm would be your best bet for $10,000. You would need some basic suspension upgrades to make it half way decent, but the great motor goes a long way to making that car fast on the track. C4 Vette would also do pretty good but I would bet it would be a lot rougher and less reliable than a comparably priced f-body. A twin turbo 300zx would not be a bad option either but again realiability comes into play at that price point, same with a 3rd Gen FD3S Rx7 which would be horribly reliable. If you wanted to modify some cars then other options pop up that would be very fast on the track such as an AWD Turbo DSM (Eclipse/Talon), built Mazda Miata (car could be had for under 2 grand leaving 8K for mods), build up a Mustang, etc, quite a few fast choices.

the FD would be horrible reliable for only 10k. you would need to spend more if you wanted a reliable (well as reliable as rotaries get) FD

my vote would go with a 1g or 2g DSM, they can be made real fast (like 9 in the quarter) and are real cheap

By FAR the RX7 in any year. You can rev those rotaries HARD and HIGH and get a lot out of them.

Get a crappy bodied '93 RX7 and put a single turbo on it for $3000 and you have a tiny, pretty light, 400+ HP car that can rev till the cows come home.

A C4 is probably your best bet for the money if you spend $10k and have to keep it bone stock...

heck for $3900 you can go nearly as fast (as on the 1000) on a 2001 GSXR 750... and I happen to know where one is for sale :D nudge nudge, wink wink...

and you'd still beat any car

take the $6100 left over and buy a truck to take it to the track. ;D

A top of the line Toyota MR2 turbo.

You can even modify it to go very fast indeed.

It would depend on your reasoning behind keeping it stock. If you don't really want to work on it, basic things on a 300ZX TT can get you near 400 bhp. If you have a 10 grand limit and want the absolute fastest car you can build for 10 grand, I would go with a Miata for handling or a DSM (Eclipse/Talon) for all out straight line speed with a good platform for handling as well. There are many people who bought a $2000 DSM and put a grand into it and were running mid 12 second 1/4 miles. If you have to keep it stock, I would say C4 Vette or 300ZX TT. The other players in that game, namely the Supra and RX-7 (both of the turbo varieties) are not below 10 grand yet.

Ls1 camaro/firebird. I took my z28 upto 148mph once and it still wasn't topped off. Topspeed is actually around 162mph on these cars. Pretty impressive for such a cheap/affordable car.

0-60 and 1/4 mile times were equally impressive. Handling was nothing special, but decent. The thing that hampered it the most was the overall length i thought. It just felt overly huge. To get an idea of what i mean, the 4th gen camaro's are as long as the new Benz CLS sedans.

I'd be interested in the idea behind this hypothetical inquiry. I don't get it.

I would get a 944 turbo, it will handle miles better than any firebird/trans am, so for track use, I would think its faster.

I saw for 10k the cheapest fast car u can get is a 5.0. The parts are everywhere and they are pretty fun cars. They top out at 135.

You got that right, might be able to get a "OK" '98 for around 10 grand....
    Get a 6-speed. High 4's to 60, low 13's, over 160 stock.

944 Turbo is junk. I wouldn't waste your time with that. The guy who suggested the single turbo FD3S is out of his mind. You can't build a single turbo FD for $3000. You probably would be hard pressed to build a trackably reliable single turbo FD for $10K in mods ontop of the purchase price of a good running car (which is usually over 10K). Like I said the F-body is surprisingly fast around the track even with its crappy live rear suspension. The DSM can be very fast around the track and the 1/4 mile but those cars can get very expensive to keep going and most definitley not in the hands of a newbie enthusiasts no familiar with modifying turbo jap cars.

I can do at least 32.15 feet per second per second* for $10k. Sucks for the guys up in the mountains, though.

    Not to heavy, about 3400....
And for about $1000 in suspension mods it will corner
better then 99% of the cars on the road.

Go check out a SCCA race and you'll see what beats up on Porsches, Vipers, RX-7s etc....

Question is what are you guys smoking. The 944 Turbo porsches I've seen at the track come on a trailer, fully gutted, and get beaten by guys in low priced ultra budget cars who drove to the track Ie DSm's, Built Honda's, Miata etc. That is when they even run. Infact even the porsche lovers make fun of them badly.
