1198!
I would go for a older Monster 900. I have seen ads for around 3 grand for a 99 and the looks haven't changed that much since then. Most people will see the name on the tank and think you are riding the latest one. I have ridden a few in different engine sizes and they are great bikes. The early ones are quick without being a handful. Of course if you get a S2 or a S4R, those are way faster.
I've been riding dirt and street bikes since June 1969 and for a first ever motorcycle I recommend a 200-250cc dual sport so you can ride/learn on the dirt and street. Take the beginner, intermediate and advanced MSF courses and practice in some of the off-road trails in your area. Hopefully you have places like ...www.durhamtown.com or www.highlandparkresort.com ...in your state. After you are competent on the trail and street, then buy the street bike you want...and keep the dual sport as they are more fun anyway. Trail riding will make you a much better street rider.
I'm almost as tall as you (6' 2-1/2") with a 34" inseam. I find the 999 to be perfectly comfortable stock. I have a biposto, but the monos have adjustable seat positons as well as footpegs. You can also get a taller seat from Sargent. If you want the 999R, don't settle for an ST3.
Tex-- rather than going for a discontinued ST3, check out the Triumph Sprint. I just got one a couple of months ago, and it's a fantastic bike! At least go look at one.
How does reliability compare between the two? I seem to remember the Triumphs of yesteryear being a bit on the untrustworthy side. How are the newer bikes?
So far mine has been great. My brother has put around 15,000 miles on his Triumph Rocket III without any problems. And after all, Tex is talking about a Ducati ST3-- not exactly the gold standard for reliability, although my Ducati Monster has been flawless for years.
Well this is a drag....BoA won't play on the loan.....a drag.. They won't even up the limit on my CC...... My neighbor ( on the 1098) has spotted a used ST3 on a BMW bike chat site, he's going to get me the info on that one...it's silver. This credit stuff pizzes me off though..... No red ST3 for ol' Tex, man, is my gf happy! Mom, too.....
Well, fate decided an ST3s, with ABS! A very nicely optioned machine, $18,800.00 on the 2006 original Bill of Sale.... It has 74 miles on it.... It has carbon fibre pipes on it, but he gave me the original ones too, so.....here it is.....it's hiding in my garage until some Title and licensing issues are 'worked out".....it's mine, tho. Thanks to everyone, as you see, it's been a long considered purchase!! Image Unavailable, Please Login
