My son and I just started a local fencing program. I think it's absolutely great. It's the right mix of mental, hand-eye, and physical coordination for me. I'm starting this sport at the age of 41. Do I have any real competitive future, or shall I just fence and enjoy it for the rest of my life?
I used to fence for a little while in high school -- great total body activity! Even though it was a short lived endeavor (program went bye bye), I miss it. I remember my legs being sore for days after my first session. I always wanted to try it again now that I'm in faaaar better shape. Heck, as with most things, I say take it as far as you can. If you find something that limits you, maybe just relax and enjoy it, but if it comes easily and you're passionate about it, go for it! No reason not to, especially at only 41.
I used to Fence at a local club in my home town... actually won a AFLA tournament ... but then got away from it.. then got too fat ... but would love to start again. it is a total body work out, along with strategy and tactics. the last time I fenced, was back in 97 - and i have to say that the club i was in was more focused on brute force and speed than technique... they did have a couple of olympic fencers there... but that is why i really stopped, I'm not going to the olympics and while its nice to win, I just want to spar, that is the fun of it. I was taught by a German coach, and she was focused on basics, good foot work and blade skills. I've fenced all 3 weapons, but like Foil and Saber the best. Epee, is a bit rough for me.
It IS fun. What a great combination of physical and mental. I know I already said that, but it's GREAT!
I took some fencing classes at the YMCA back in St. Louis. I thought they were going to teach me how to steal TVs actually it was a fun class but didn't pursue it beyond that.
I fence, too, in the SF Bay Area. I don't compete. Last time I was on the competitive strip was in college -- years ago. I only fence foil, and I love it. It is a great work-out; and, I'm a lefty, so I never have a problem being challenged or meeting new fencers.
I know nothing about it other than it looks like great fun. Where would I begin? Is it an expensive sport? What gear does a beginner need?
I'm sure that there's a fencing club or studio in Louisville. Generally you can start with no equipment. Sign up for a beginner class and the studio will provide you with everything.
