if you could walk into the Speedway museum and select 3 cars that you could spend a day with on the track which would you choose ? Mine are 1982 Wildcat Cosworth ( Ex Gordy Johncock winner ) made in Indy by Phil Riley 1991 Penske Ilmor ( Ex Rick Mears winner ) 1993 Lola Buick ( Gary Bettenhausen car ) former track record holder my stand by would be the 1971 Colt Johnny Lightning Special, ex Al Unser winner. Ford 4 cam V8 Brian
In no particular order: 1968 Lotus Turbine 1981 Eagle Chevrolet (Pepsi Challenger) Can't decide from about 12 other cars!
Mark Donohue's 1972 Penske McLaren would be #1. Parnelli Jones' car from 1963. Mario Andretti's Hawk from 1969. Mike, Zanardi never drove in the Indianapolis 500. However, Michael Andretti had or perhaps still has the dubious honor of leading the most laps and not winning (throughout his career at the Indianpolis 500).
Jim Clarke 1965 winner, I'm done. Remember this car ran one one set of replacement tires ! Lotus 38 with the ford v8 . gtjoey1314
Ok...now that amatuer hour is over... Chaparral 2K 1994 Penske/Mercedes stock block. "BEAST" 1975 AAR Olsenite Eagle (1000hp Offy) Real race cars and not spec racers for kids.
95 Reynard Cosworth #27 Villeneuve (from two laps down to win) https://goo.gl/images/HGx7xR 68 Mallard Offy #56 Hurtubise (end of the roadster era) https://goo.gl/images/yPmzaj 52 Ferrari 375 #12 Ascari (Borranis???sheesh) https://goo.gl/images/k9Gwe8
I grew up near the speedway and would skip soo much school every year just to go hang on the infield fence and watch practice and talk to my hero's.. such fun.. those guys were like Neil Armstrong to me.. . .. ...
Hard to argue against these... I'd probably lose MY LIFE entering turn 1 at 240.... My choices? 1968 Bobby Unser car - saw it at the Unser museum in Albuquerque and it's gorgeous. 1971 Donohue McLaren M16 (probably) 1982 Rick Mears Penske PC-10B But there are soooo many I'd love to drive, to limit the list is a shame, but understandable - you can't drive em all. Unser Eagle, Jerry Grant Eagle, Tom Sneva Texaco Star, Foyt Coyote, Ongais Interscope, funny how nobody has picked anything newer than 1995.
I like your pick on the Sneva March.. Danny's Interscope car is also a good choice.. I would love to get my hands on a 73 Eagle Offy.. the Gordy car he won with.. or, the 81 Penske that Bobby won with.. ( passed cars during the yellow ). that one..
Hey, Lotus 91, Chassey actually raced the 1981 Eagle-Chevy that made my list. I wonder what he thought of Dan's revolutionary BLATT effect car?
1968 is my year, awd- Cosworth, front engine Offy, Clark involvement, Paul Newman involvement (Movie Winning that got him started in actual racing) Dan Gurney, AJ, Mario (in two cars) Rindt, Graham Hill, Jerry Grant, Johncock, Rutherford, Hulme, Bobby n Al, Ruby, Leonard, Vukovich II, Bettenhausen. That would have been the one I would have wanted to attend more than any other.
David, he sure did. It was the Water Jet car. blue car. Steve still holds the record for stock block engines. Plus, he is the only driver to have run a ' Offy, Cosworth, Stock Block, and Buick ". all at the speedway. Steve had to bring the sponsorship to AAR for him to run that car but he did well with what he had. He actually took his rookie test in a Penske Offy which was then Josele Garza's ride. Steve is a good buddy. we are having dinner again this year the Saturday night before the race. we do every year. this year we are inviting Pancho Carter, Gordy, JR and possibly Sneva if that knucklehead will join us. .
Tell Steve what a huge Dan Gurney fan I was and remain. Met Dad when he was racing the Eagle F-1 car and visited w/ him at many, many races over the years. My all-time racing hero by a wide margin. I would love to read of Steve's insider impressions of Dan.
ahhh.. Good choice on the Lotus type 96. I have been trying to get Clive Chapman to sell me that for years but it wont leave Hethel.
