While I'm sure someone will be quick to point out the contradiction in those two terms (Arlie?), I understand your question. In my non-expert opinion, a best-of-the-best 4-cam could bring upwards of $700K in today's market. Any of the real experts out there (T.S.) feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.:)

Does anyone know what the highest value for a 275 GTB/4 was when the market peaked in 1989?

Well short of 700 as far as I have seen

    I know of
    400
    435
    450 Euro
    475
    575
    625
    650ish

    No 700's

WAYNE: Please never call me an expert, marque specialist is more appropriate.

Expert is a term reserved to a special unobjective and self proclaimed individual with a little bit of knowledge. Always and Never are words regularly used by this group.

And you don't agree that a "best-of-the-best" example "could bring" over 700?

The problem with questions like this is that, if a car in this condition hasn't changed hands recently, we're all just guessing.

Btw, I throw the term "expert" around quite a bit but my toungue is usually planted firmly in cheek when I do.;)

700k seems high but so did 350 a few years ago. I notice Paul Russell is "asking" 700 for one. He has had it for a while. I think the real nice cars are not for sale, or the sales are done privately. For a car to go for that kind of money today it would have to be fresh out of a full restoration by one of the very few best of the best. But if you have a car like that, why sell it unless you have to or want to move up. But what would be the next level?, a 250swb for 1.3mil?

i have a friend that has been having a car done for some years now. it is being restored by david carte. david is known to be one of the very best in the world so this car when completed may be the best in the world. i hope the car will be done for the world to see next spring.

i think when it is finished it will go to all the appropriate shows and win all the awards ...then get sold.

it is funny as the restoration began several years ago when the prices were a good bit lower. it is nearly impossible to throw away bad money on a big dollars resto if your car was purchased a few years back as you will still be in the money!!!

Yes, He is one of the best of the best. Even today if you bought a roach of a 275gtb4 for 400k and restored it for another 200k(I might be a little low), I think you would be safe.I wish I bought one in the early eighties, but for the same price I wanted was a brand new 308!

I was in David's shop a week or so before Monterey - it is somewhere between heaven and a candystore. I saw a 275 in primer - possibly you friends . ..

The highest figure I could readily find: Coys sold 10861 for the then-equivalent of $1,037,725 in December of 1985, well before the market peaked.

    Thank you very much, Wayne.
Does that mean that the $1 million-plus figure is in 2005 dollars or in 1985 dollars? From your description, it sounds like it's in today's dollars.

I do know that my 330 2+2 sold for $115,000 in 1989, which would be somewhere around $185,000 today, depending on how you value the dollar.

I'm also just interested in comparisons to the 1980's market in general for vintage Ferraris.

just one more of those "if only" stories.

back in 2001, just before i bought my dino, i looked at a 67 275gtb/4 that had been almost completely rebuilt mechanically, but needed cosmetics. although i thought it was agreat deal, i wasn't in a position to buy it at the time. the asking price was $135k.

The car Paul Russell had is well restored and its' owner has turned down high 600Ks for it. He feels it is just a matter of time before he gets his price.

My father in law owned the only (I believe) alloy body GTB/4 with outside filler cap which he bought from Chinetti in 1968 for $9000. He sold it in 1983 for $90k and thought he did alright. The car was resold in the late 80s for around $1 million.

    Things really do change.
