I've been meaning to take the journey myself, I've driven by the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum a few without thinking about it. Thanks for posting your photos, Dave.

I went there myself, about 3 years ago. Flew from Dallas to Midland just to see and it was well worth the trip. Jim Hall and Hap Sharp were two of the great innovators in motor sports. As an aside I had a friend who worked in Continental airlines air freight back in the 60's and 70's and he was telling about the huge shipments from GM Detroit to some little outfit in Midland. This was a great GM "skunk works".

There is a nice little museum in either Sonora or Ozona as well. Ozona I think. Shelby Cobra and Shelby Coupe included.

Is it at a truck stop? Big glass windows, place looks nearly abandoned?

Yes, it was at a truck stop. Been a few years since I've been through that area.

I saw that place a couple of years ago... My recollection was that the cars were simply parked indoors and left to rot... Luckily I don't think any of them were really historically important, the GT40 was a kit car, there were some old drag cars that had been run locally, a couple of formula ford type open wheelers, stuff like that. Again, just my recollection.

Great pics Dave. I could spend a day there.

When dryhole and I were there on the Texas 1000 Vintage Rallye, Jim spoke to our group after dinner. While in line for Mexican food, I asked Jim about the Cox Chaparral slot cars I used to race. He said when they came to him to build a slot racer, he thought it was no big deal. After they sold a bazillion of them, it became a much bigger deal than he ever thought.

    Thanks for posting.

    Digman52,

Very recent article has been written about car #66. Thank you again for that trip and the time we spent with Jim. It was the most memorable event of my all of my adult automobile experiences.

Remember walking on his Rattlesnake Raceway?

My grandparents are from there, and my grandpa took me sometime around year 2000. He had been part of the car scene and had known some of those guys personally. Very cool place!
