I got my numbers from C&D. (they have one test of a coupe at 4.5 to 60) The targas have an additional 140 odd lbs...which is felt on a 3000 lb car.

Jim, This Audi don't look like sports car to me! It just look like a sedan.

What is general perception/image of sports cars??

BTW, I am patiently waiting for the next issue in my mail box.

If you're talking about new cars only, my vote would go to the E46 M3. I just sold mine today and am gonna miss it. Considering what you get, $50k is a great price for that car - performance, looks, decent exclusivity, etc...
Vettes of course are great too, but I can't remember the last time I went a full day without seeing at least 10 of them.

wrx are great fun for the money... two draw backs for me... the styling is too much boy racer...better for some one in their teens opr twenties... and the cheap materials subu uses in the interior... also the car feels tinny to me... for the money you cant beat it... esp the wagon with all the cargo room

Gotta tell you, other than the marginal AC a well sorted 328 is a great daily driver

    70140 as of this morning.

Going back to the original question, realistically a good 3rd gen rx7 or Supra will be a great daily driver.

Third gen? My mechanic used to ask me "Whatd' ya' mean it just went BOOM? He did it more then once.

Great cars. Need to be fairly heavily modified to be reliable. Well sorted out cars are very expensive.

    Great daily driver sports car?

    NSX or a corvette

or on the cheap. The second generation MR2's. That's what I have now. Cheap fast reliable mid engine. 240hp is very easy.

What year did they switch the Z3 M roadster from the 240 hp E36 to the 315 hp E46 engine? I have been test driving Boxsters, but I should probably try one of these.....

    thx

Great fun car with the 315Hp

But didn't they have a bad batch of engines for a few months ( 2001? or 2002?) and BMW did not want to admit to it?

Hands down, the best everyday sports car is a 911 Carrera 4. Comfortable, fast, reliable, terrific in rain and snow as well as dry pavement, reasonable luggage space, etc. Spendy though.

Yes, they apparently had a bad batch of rod bearings in late 2001 thru early 2002. BMW dragged their feet for a while, blaming owners, but eventually issued a recall, and even extended the warranty on the powertrain to 100k miles. Haven't heard of any engine problems for some time now. My 2002 M3 lunched its motor big time at Willow Springs in May '03. I was in the recall program time frame but hadn't got in to do the work yet. Got a new factory motor out of the deal and the car has been perfect since.

c5 or z06. I guess you could throw the new c6 in there as well. Reliable, easy to service, excellent gas mileage (close to 30mpg on highway), and it offers tons of performance for your buck. Doesn't really get better than that.

Luke, BMW made the s54 (315hp) model in 2001 and 2002. I had an 01, as well as a 00 model. Very fun cars and great tossability. I just took delivery of a boxster on Friday though and it is even more fun. The particular car I got is a 3.4 carrera engine conversion, puts out a tad more hp with mods, about 325 but weighs 600 lbs less than the m roadster. Suffice it to say, weight loss difference, mid engine and lower center of gravity all add up to a much better and faster sports car. Both very fun cars though and a nice change of pace to the ferrari(ie no worries).

Only the 2001&2002 had the 315hp setup. I checked out a couple Before buying my Spyder and while yes it will throw you back in your seat I found it to be a pretty poor ride overall. Most were bought to be really driven and it showed on the couple I looked at. Am wondering if BMW will make a Z4 M roadster at some point.
