Hi, I'm new here! I bought a 83 Ferrari 400i which was stored in a dry garage for 20 years! Now the car is in my garage and i'll try to get it back to the road!

It's clear to change all fluids, filters, spark plugs, etc.

    - First i noticed that one fuel pump wasn't running, so i change it.
    - Second i noticed, that the fuel arrives the K-Jetronic with good pressure, but at the 6 outlets there was no fuel. I removed the K-jetronic without dismatling. The middle piston was fixed by dry fuel. A bath in thinner solved this problem and the piston works now correct! I installed the K-Jetronik again (three screws) and now the fuel pumbs don't work!

I checked all connection in the fuse box which are ok. When i bridge the corresponding relais, they work!

Now i don't know the next step to get the pumps normaly running...!

Maybe somebody has a good tip for a Ferrari newbie!

... and sorry for my bad English....

Congratulations on your new acquisition and best wishes for many happy miles when you get her fully awakened for the road!

I'll let the other, more knowledgeable, technical experts here help you out with the fuel pump issues. You seem to have confirmed that the fuse and relay panel is working correctly and that is important because those connections are a notorious weak area of the car.

    Best,

    John

    Hi John

yes you are right! All connections seems to be ok! I think the problem will be a switch or some other hidden things....

Can't help with the ignition, but a thourough cleaning of all part, new fuel lines and some gaskets/filters will do wonders.

welcome. i found that my DeLorean had the same fuel system X 2. the Alpine 310A the same. parts were very cheap when the box did not say Ferrari. you need a PowerProbe to track down lack of function. plodding and painfully slow analyses, but doable

Your car is a nice color for a 400.

I had similar fuel pump problems. First the left side pump would not run when starting up but would kick in after a few minutes. Then it started dropping out on long trips. I first replaced the pump. Later I found that the terminals were burned. They are located in the right hand plug (8 or 10 prong white plug). I bet if you pull the plug you will find bad burned contacts and plastic. I replace: white plug, connectors for both pumps, relays for both pumps. Left pump worked fine; now the right pump started acting up in spite of all new things in the relay/fuse panel. One poster claimed that old pumps draw more current leading to the overheating of components. I now agree with him. I replace the RH pump and have had no further problems.

Since you replace one pump already I suggest you replace the other plus both filters since you are having injection issues too. Check the connector for overheated contacts. Both the plugs and connectors are available from F-dealers. Replace the two relays with the new plastic cap type.

I hope this helps with the pumps.

    Great find!

Don't forget the tires are 20 years old also. You might want to replace them before going on a high speed run.

    Hi Ken

I'll check the connections as you described and will do some photos.

When should the pumps start working normally:

    - When i switch on the igniton or
    - only when i press the starter?

The tyres will be changed when the car is on the road ....

I checked all the connections and they looked all like new as you see on the pictures. I don't think that this is a connection problem!

I noticed, when i switch on the ignition, then the pumps start for half a second and then they stop again. When i try again, they are quite. After 24 hours they will start again for half a second and stop..... Is there a pressure switch or anything else?

    Here are some more pictures...

The pumps are not supposed to start until there is air flow through the left side Fuel Injection system. There is a little plug in switch in the body of the Bosch distributor that detects the disc has risen off its seat. If you pull out that plug (I have done this 100 times while testing) the pumps will start with the ignition switch. There is a fuel accumulator after the pumps to give you plenty of fuel to get motor started, unless it has sat for months. If you look at Right FI system there is no plug which is normal.

I have not yet looked at your pics. If I see anything interesting I will send a second note.

The second picture shows the connector with the fuel pumps. One of the pumps has brown wires and is near the top of the connector. I forget the second pumps color.

When I pulled my connector out the side of the plastic was "crispy" brown. Yours looks okay. The terminals also get weak over time but if they are not making good contact they will arc and show the heat.

The replacement pumps I bought are about 25mm longer than the original pumps, so you have to cut the fuel line from the tank a bit short. Also check that the pump is not hitting the chassis if you end up with same pumps that I have.

Unfortunately the Daytona was out of my budget! He is sold now, remains in Switzerland and will have a full restauration...

It really does make me sad inside to see these cars just parked and essentially forgotten about. If you really can't drive them then there should be a rule that says you have to sell them to someone who can take care of it.

I am so happy that both the 400 and the Daytona are going to be driven now! :)
