Sure would be interested to know what 6-speed tranny was put in it since we all know it didn't come from the factory with one.
It sure doesn't appear to be a typo as its in the listing header and description. Kind of suggests the rest of the description is suspect.
It's not as if there is much information to begin with to consider "suspect" although it does mention "thorough, documented service" that would be very interesting to see. At least this car has been driven nearly 2,000 miles since the last time I saw it listed for sale in 2011 from another seller.
Does anyone have any info on this car?? That seems too cheap by a LOT for a USA based 5 speed with that kind of mileage! (And super nice color combo)
This car was for sale at Specialty sales several months ago. I recall that it was discussed at that time in this forum. Here is the link to the old ad: http://www.specialtysales.com/1983-ferrari-400i--c-3429.htm
Interesting note of its description... "Only about 1/3 of the 1,294 Ferrari 400i's made featured 5 speed manuals...In fact, to work around export limitations, the odometer was purposely turned up to make it appear as a used car! The owner estimates that this was done to the tune of roughly 15,000 miles. Currently it reads 29,000 miles." Anybody hear of this fable??
Yes.. It's called "Bullsh@t". But seriously- has anyone laid eyes on this car? And how has it not sold yet under $30K??
That's a really attractive car. And at that price. Sam are you looking? To say that the rolling the speedo forward is a fable is to somehow indicate that it is more likely fiction than a possibility. If there is one thing that I've learned in my time around Ferraris, it's that Ferraris are capable of amazing things. The people around them are too. Stranger things have been known to happen.
Yeah I was waiting for someone to call "BS" on the speedo line of crap. You notice that it has been hit in the front? Check the front bumper, it has been tweaked and pushed up a bit. Why do you suppose they put front markers on it when they were already there? I understand the rear but surely it would have passed with the factory fronts. That is a replacement exhaust. (Note to you newbies who are hanging out here and thinking about obtaining one of these; these cars eat exhaust systems. A factory replacement is well over $6k now)
In California, if you want to register an out of state, used car that was not originally 50-state compliant, it must have over 6000 miles on the odometer. Otherwise, it is not considered a used car. Rather it is considered a new car. A new car that is not 50 state compliant, i.e., not set up for California emissions, cannot be registered in California. Hence, some people have taken low miles, used cars that were not originally intended for import into California, and added miles to the odometer to be able to register them in California as used cars. I don't know what happened here with this car, but adding miles to the odometer is not unheard of.
These were NOT brought into the country by Ferrari- They were brought into the USA by Tom Cruise in "Rain Main". While I'm sure a few used ones were brought over NOBODY in their right mind was paying $30K to legalize a "Used" Ferrari in the 80s.
