Just brought my 1977 Ferrari 400 GTA through German M.O.T. without any problems, only exaust needs to be replaced partly.

Since ANSA parts do not seem to be the top quality and are very pricey I am looking for used rear silencers on both sides. Can anyone help with ideas where to look for parts?

    Thanks!

Eurospares in the UK, or go to an exhaust specialist that can build you a new system in stainless steel. The latter option will cost you about 2K euro's, but that will be a one time investment.

Oh, btw, you own a V12 Ferrari now, so you'd better get used to to word "pricey" :D

    Thanks - I'll try that

Btw no need to own a V12 to spend lots of money... Spent huge amounts on my Maserati V6. I'd better not put the USD amout, it's still scary a few months later :)

There was an offer on this forum some time ago:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=321217

Or search for Nuvolari Group buy if the above URL does not work. Not sure the offer is still valid but since it has been appearing a couple of times it I would think that should be possible. Unfortenately there is no 4xx known to run this exhaust.

As for the original exhausts. If you want to go for original then do not use the car for short trips. I was adviced many years ago to never use the car for short trips (the gasses do not properly heat up and the water condensates in the exhaust causing the rust).

Do not know whether this is true but have been running the originals since 2001.

However if i need to replace I will certainly look for something with less restriction and more sound. That V12 must be able to sound much better. (still thinking about a system that is original but lets you split before the rear wheels to exhaust pipes ending before the rear wheels like some American musclecars from the 60's).

    True!

As for bargain 400 exhaust systems : Automax in Holland can make you a cutom SS-system. They were the cheapest I have even found. I do not know where you live Flo400, but in the UK there are dozens of specialists that can build you a affordable brandnew exhaust too. And if you have more to spend, try Tubi, Supersprint.

    Good hunting!

I am working on it, thank you all for the suggestions. As for the short trips I knew it in advance. However, my typical trip is between 2-4 km only since every place I want to go to here in Munich is very near. But I just can't let the car sitting in the garage. It's not good for the carburettors as well so from time to time I need to have them done as well.

    Someone tried a calculation cost/km - I guess that's not helpful for a Ferrari. Rather fun/km..

I rebuilt my rear silencers; my tips had rusted and a resonator tip had fallen, but the shell itself is stainless and was OK. So I cut the old pipe loose (start from the tip and cut down to the shell), then found replacement perforated exhaust pipe from a motorcycle supply. The perforated pipe goes the full length of the silence, the old perforated pipe was common steel and rusted badly enough that it simply pulled out of the shell. Weld in the perforated pipe, then build a 2.5" exterior shell from common exhaust adapters. I finished with 2.5" chrome resonator tips, I think mine came from Hooker header and cost about $25 a tip. These looks almost identical to stock, except that the originals are about 2.75" diameter instead.

My undercar exhaust was also rusted, for that I replaced the 3-per-side muffler system with a pair-per side of stainless 3.5x7" Magnaflow 11148. Each is a 2-in, 1 out with internal y-pipe, so I put these back to back (2 in at 2.0" inlet, meet in the middle at 2.5", then the rear muffler provides the other Y-pipe and provides the 2 outlets to the 1.75" pipes that run thru the suspension and meet up with the rear silencers). the Y-pipe/crossover should mean lower noise and better performance (the original 400 exhaust operates as 4 almost independent channels, with only the small cross-over after the resonator closest to the engine...From what I can tell Stebro doesn't have the crossover, so essentially the performance is like 10 feet of glass packs).

    I thought I had pictures handy....Lee

I run straight stainless back to a stainless magnaflow on each side. Sounds correct at idle and ROARS when you step on it.

yup, they're still totally appropriate and civilized with straights through the middle...but there's much more volume under load...which i love.

i describe it this way after the OEM centers are gone,...' now the car sounds like it looks like it should sound ' !

Sounds good. Is there any drawback when driving at constant speed. So between 120 and 180 km/hours. No resonance or other problems.

Does the back still look stock ? Would not want to loose the double tips at the back but would love more volume.

    Any pictures ?

No trouble at all unless you count hauling around the extra $5,000 I have in my pocket because I didn't have to buy the crappy faxctory exhaust. (actually it was on my car when I bought it)

    Pictures? Sure.

If this is of some help on ideas for after-market exhaust..As with many of you, I was struggling with replacing the entire 400 pound four silencers/two cats..After several years of pondering the $3000/$4000 butt plug from after market suppliers, and listening to everyone's nightmare regarding service/ fit, ect., I took a different tack..I was very fortunate to find a muffler/ exhaust shop that custom fabricates on a daily basis. Rick put the beast on the lift, and didn't bat an eye.."How does $400 sound?.. gulp..I agreed and away we went..I had no clue how montrously heavy the old system was. He started by keeping the flanges that bolt to the collectors(the most important step)..Then he started with steel because he did not have four really long pieces of 2" pipe..We used four tubular Thrusher glass-packs that I supplied for each of the pipes( no cats in Florida)..then he measured and mandrelled four pieces to fit around the the rear suspension parts...perfect..then we fitted the four Ansa tailpipes that I had bought from a fellow F-catter the sound is outragious at ALL revs..he also fabricated some new hangers for the rubber doughnuts..I am thrilled with this entire set up, but would of course preffered stainless but VHT paint has helped preserve the exterior..I also learned one more thing about the low point in the exhaust system where the deterioraton occurs from raw gas sitting..most of this can be minimized by NOT revving before shutting down ( cool as we may think it sounds). This entire proccess occurred in three hours time in front of my very eyes..I hope that is is of some value to someone out there...Jacques

Yes indeed..My exhaust was fabricated at Rainbow Muffler on 38th Ave. in St. Petersburg by Rick, I believe is his name..He builds muscle cars. He is co owner, but his partner , a big guy has an "attitude" so deal with Rick, as he actually likes what he does(what a concept) and he won't boost your price. It's been about three or four years, but he will remember the Ferrari. You can call for an appointment, but these places usually deal on a first come first served basis..Their sister shop is in Clearwater and the owner their really knows his stuff too, but when I brought my Corvette to him, he treated me like crap, and I couldn't get away from there fast enough..probably just two personalities that didn't jive..Rick's my man,and he doesn't mind if you furnish your own mufflers and tips...I hope that this is of some help to you,and feel free to PM me if you need to..Jacques

Yes, mine are one it and one out. Inlet is offset and outlet is in center. I have different (unknown source)but similar than Dave has. Center pipes are 2 1/4" I believe which adds to the noise level. 2" pipes would be quieter.
