The car on offer was sold new to one of the most loyal and famous privateer Ferrari race teams ever, the well-known Scuderia Marzotto of Valdagno, Italy which ordered 2 new Ferrari 212 chassis with drive train from Ferrari in November 1950 (0084E and 0086E).

Chassis 0084E with complete Ferrari 212 Export drive train was delivered new to Scuderia Marzotto early in 1951. The “foglio montaggio” gives 30.01.1951 as completion date for the gearbox and 02.02.195 as completion date for the engine with only one carburetor. Furthermore it gives 14.02.1951 as completion date for the chassis. The “certificate di origine” was finally issued on 22.02.1951. Copies of the original “foglio montaggio” and the ACI/PRA documents for the former registration on plates “VI 20362” are included in the documentation to this car.

In these early days it was very common that privateer race teams simply ordered a chassis and complete drive train from Ferrari just to decide on their own which coachbuilder is chosen to build the bodywork. The same applied for 0084/E. Scuderia Marzotto opted for this wonderful race car a barchetta-body created by the ingenious Carrozzeria Touring (and for the sister car, chassis 0086/E, a body from Fontana).

According to the ACI papers for “VI 20362” the issuing date of the first registration of 0084/E was 20.03.1951. Due to the fact that the body of 0084/E clearly wears styling elements of Touring Barchettas which can only be seen on very early 1949to 1950 Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta Touring race cars, it is the understanding today that Scuderia Marzotto used the front and rear body of Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta Touring chassis 024MB which had an accident at the Mille Miglia in 1950, then driven by Umberto Marzotto.
0084/E was more or less sparingly used by Scuderia Marzotto between 1951 and 1953, mainly for driver Guido Mancini and i.e. entered in the Targa Florio on 09.09.1951 and in between the engine 0084/E was modified from 1 to 3 carburetors by the factory and repainted in white.

On 29.10.1953 0084/E finally was sold by the Scuderia Marzotto to Curcio Alfredo di Armando, Via Tarvisio 1, Roma and re-registered on plates “Roma 188973”.

In August 1957, Walter M. Sheldon, Jr. a young college graduate from Hinsdale, IL, USA saw 0084/E by incident on his obligatory holiday trip to Europe displayed at the then Ferrari dealer in Rome, Malago. It was still painted in white and had a green vinyl interior. Walter immediately fell in love with it and finally convinced his parents to finance him the car.

He imported it to the States and drove it for only one year before his parents put pressure on him to sell the car due to bad results at University. It had a few more American owners and it is believed that it was even raced in US races though no hard evidence can be provided, only period pictures exist of 0084/E parked in the paddock.

As so many Lampredi-engine-powered Ferrari race cars the original engine was replaced by a Chevrolet V8 engine once but the original engine never got lost and was later reunited with the chassis when then owner Joe Hayden from Woodstock, IL, USA restored 0084/E in the 1970’s. By the way, Hayden had chosen a dark blue metallic as paint which suited the car perfectly.

After Hayden had passed away this car finally found its way into thorough collector hands when bought by Skeets Dunn in August 1987. Skeets Dunn commissioned a full restoration by Richard Freshman who repainted the car red with black interior.

After Skeets Dunn had enjoyed the car for a few years it was sold to the current owners in April 1993 and since then only the colour has changed into the metallic blue one can see still today. This was in the mid-90’s already and since then 0084/E was maintained by DK Engineering in the UK and Ital-Auto GmbH in Germany.
The current owners, well-known Ferrari race car collectors, entered 0084/E in many historic events such like the Mille Miglia which the car always did without any fault. After nearly 22 years being the caring custodians of this car it is now time to find a new good home for 0084/E.

0084/E already was presented to Ferrari Classiche in Maranello and the certification process is currently still pending but the certificate is eagerly awaited. Ferrari Classiche very thoroughly examined 0084/E and even took metallurgical tests on the chassis. The outcome of this examination was that the chassis is completely originally as well are the engine and gearbox which are also matching to this car. Only the rear axle is not matching but from a similar car of the same type.

Furthermore this car has a continuous history and clear ownership chain without the often enough “black holes” one can experience by so many early Ferrari race cars. The condition of the car is very good although it has to be noted that the car was not driven much in the last years so that a major service to all technical parts should be done by the new owner.

With the car comes a complete documentation including copies of the foglio montaggio and the ACI/PRA-documents as well as period images, i.e. photos Walter M. Sheldon shot when he bought the car in August 1957.

The asking price is EUR 8,0 Mio

Absolutely, but lets put it like this, 250 California @ Gooding Scottsdale vs 212 Export or another comparison would be Bonhams 250 Europa & RM's 330 GTS & a 275 GTB all for approx. 8 million EURO.

8 mil is a lot of cash.......

    Its like make it rain.

Unless a perspective buyer has complete faith in his judgement, which most probably is a serious error, the wise perspective buyer will hire one or even two of the most respected authorities to evaluate the machine and prepare an evaluation and a price bracket. That way the perspective buyer can present a valid offer to the seller and go from there. The investment in the "experts" will in most cases pay dividends in the long run. tongascrew
