Hi, Does anybody know if I am able to get a steering wheel spacer for an early 355 with the non-airbag steering wheel? The only ones I can find are for converting the steering wheel to a MOMO fitting. Any help appreciated.
Check with Hill but I think their standard spacer should work with all non-airbag 6 bolt Momo SWS01B - 25mm Spacer by: Hill Engineering - Hill Engineering Ferrari
He's talking about the oem 4 bolt non-airbag momo. I have looked and not found anything. Might need to have it made.
That shouldn't be too hard to do, Jim. When I got my F355 Challenge, Classic Coach fitted me in the cabin. They made this spacer for me for optimal reach to the steering wheel with its quick release... . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't suppose you've got an image of the column with the spacer removed? I just need to send an image to the steering company.
Yes, an adapter you could say. Drawing/pics by another member here- http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/142042847-post22.html
Thanks Jim. Is that adapter available? hill? Also, he talks about using the OEM leather cover for it? That's a separate piece that is on the wheel I have on there now? Thanks
I don't believe the adapter is available (at least as far as I can tell). The attached drawing is helpful and any machine shop could duplicate. The OEM leather cover is a separate piece, not part of the wheel. I'm missing it for the wheel I bought as well.
Are you referring the the black sleeve? My suggestion would be to anodize the hub/adapter black Jim - if you need one made for yours, let me know and we can make it in my shop
So there are two pieces? The adaptor and that leather covered ring as well? Image Unavailable, Please Login
It appears that Hill has 25 and 50mm adaptors that are black (anodized?). The hole pattern is for a 6 hole momo but I don't see why you couldn't add the 4 holes that we need and avoid the extra leather covered ring.
Swa-355-02 seems to be the part needed for this. There's a photo on Superformance site, I ordered from Ricambi
Says early wheel to late fixing. Countersunk outer holes for bigger airbag pattern at the column hub and inner threaded holes for the wheel appears correct.
Confirmed, SWA-355-02 mounts OEM non-airbag wheel to original airbag steering column hub. I'll probably tack weld a 4.25od aluminum tube onto the outside of the adapter to cover the steering wheel flange and column hub. (and have that covered in leather to match the wheel). Right. That assembly looks badass the way it is right now, jim. I'd leave it alone and put some yellow tape at the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel. . Image Unavailable, Please Login
You'll need that yellow tape when you're doing 8 second quarter miles on the dragstrip... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNwMaOBOPIU[/ame] Bring that! . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Haha, can't do it guys! Yes I'm reducing weight but not at the compromise of aesthetics. Made an outer flange from 1/16 aluminum. Covered in leather to match the wheel I think will be a better look. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So how were these non airbag wheels originally installed with no spacer? Was the hub of the steering column 25mm longer?
You're damn right it is! While I thought my modified adapter looked decent, still not OEM. So I bought a 456 steering wheel that happened to have the hub and leather hub cover included. The hub bolted right in place of the original airbag hub/clockspring. I put the 456 wheel on it for now until my non airbag 355 wheel gets back from upholstery. It's not correct of course but still think it looks pretty nice. Even closer if you painted the center black or had it covered in leather. (and new horn button with no chrome ring). Bob, do you have any more pics of your wheel? That appears to be a 456 wheel from what I can see. (just wondering if there are more versions than I'm aware of) The non airbag 355 wheel I have is a steel core, with leather covered foam to make up the inner body. Rim has perforated sections on the 3 and 9 o'clock grips. Stamped steel horn pad, covered in leather. The 456 wheel is an aluminum core, with leather covered foam. No perforated leather. Horn pad is stamped aluminum, painted.
Coming from a guy who is making every piece of his car non-OEM by modifying it? :/ducking for cover/:
