Unfortunately raising the trunk height vs the 400 to increase downforce had a negative effect on the lines of the car.

Interesting - I did not know this was the reason for the change.

To each his own... to my eyes, the 412 rear looks much more balanced and in line with the front to rear wedge shape of the car. I much prefer it to the 400, although both are beautiful.

It did, which makes me dislike the 412 more than I should. That and the horrible wheels.

I never knew that but now that you have pointed it out, the subtle shift of height from the base of the windshield and the top of the trunk is noticeable. What has been seen now cannot be unseen. I will always be squinting when I look at a 412 from now on!

Soft market or poop colored interior? It was quite a way off the auction estimate. Wow.

Thanks for your continued documentation efforts Sam. I always look forward to your posts.

    Good day Brian,

Could be a bit of both? In the current value thread someone posted that they saw the car and stated that it did not look as nice as the pics (https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/current-values.598216/#post-146556104). Perhaps this was the reason? As for the market in general? Hard to say. There are not that many of these cars that sell and so our data set is a bit small in order to draw a true valuation and overall trend. Adding to this we have local and international market differences, car condition variances, etc and so this even further adds to the dynamic range of current values.

As for documentation efforts... you are most welcome and your comment about my posts is most kind! I try and document as much as I can and include relevant info and pics if possible. I find that at times simply providing a link can result in that link becoming dead in the future. Thus cutting and pasting the text and adding pics in a thread helps maintain longevity of the info...which allows one to easily search for data on a particular car. If I wasn't so knackered I would spend some time and write a script to find and scrape all of the data on these cars on a monthly basis. This would ultimately save a lot of time and have consistent info. Yet another pet project to my never ending list :)

Have a great weekend and I hope you out enjoying your car!

    Cheers,

    Sam

Also interesting that the prior auction took place in Germany while the new auction will be in the US (Indiana).

Indiana, for those that are not familiar, is friendly to mostly American pick up trucks, trucks, pick up trucks, trucks, and some Mustangs, Camaros, and Corvettes. Not sure why they chose this location for the vehicle but... it will either be a steal or, a no-sale.

Congratulation on this purchase. Love the color combination, makes the car distinctive from the usual black or creamy interior. On top of it, in the long run, the patina of these dark leathers is outstanding.

Ross, the process is not for the faint of heart, as California doesn’t make it an easy or inexpensive process to go through. I unfortunately don’t have any suggestions on where to start this, but there must be folks that do this regularly - there’s definitely a niche market in CA for 90s Japanese domestic market models, so perhaps this may be a place to start.

I also own a 412 5 speed which was CARB certified back in 1986 (it was bought to CA as a new car). LMK if you’re interested in any reference pics or would like to see it in person (in the SF Bay Area).

    Good luck!

    Ruben
