Good Morning! I recently took the plunge and purchased a Blu Pozzi 360 F1 coupe. Like many of us I gradually progressed through a series of M3s, 911, and even a couple of Lotus Exiges before taking the plunge on the Ferrari. It is also somewhat of a sentimental milestone for me as while growing up my dad had 328, 348, and 355 (in addition to a TR, Daytona, and 365GTC4) before passing away in '96. It's a pretty cool feeling to continue the mid engine v8 lineage and drive a car that he would have undoubtedly owned at some point :)

Belts were done earlier this year (prior to my purchase) but I changed all of the fluids myself, swapped the starfish wheels for 18" challenge wheels, and installed a Tubi. The black finish was peeling off of the F1 paddles so I stripped them down to bare metal and polished them with really nice results. I've put over 1K miles on it in 6 weeks, mostly on the Blue Ridge Parkway and travelling to a club event in N GA. Head over heels in love with this thing so far!

    QUESTION:

I am still in the hyper paranoid, first time owner "oh god what is that sound its going to blow up" phase so wanted to seek input from the forum:

Since I've owned the car, there has consistently been a very faint "whine" from the back half of the car when accelerating or coasting in gear. It hasn't gotten any louder over 1K miles and when I dropped the gearbox oil (which was at least 3 years old) there were no metallic particles in the screen or on the magnet. No noise when coasting in neutral or when revving the engine at a standstill.

I've spent hours reading through posts on the forum but am still not sure: is it normal to hear ANY noise at all coming from what I assume is the gearbox / transaxle? I intend to have it checked out next time I'm in the ATL or Charlotte areas, but there unfortunately don't appear to be any F car specialists here in Asheville.

Bonus question - are the "Up" and "Down" paddles supposed to be different sizes? The "Up" paddle in my car is slightly taller than the "Down" paddle. Any idea why it was designed this way?

Many thanks and hope to meet some of you guys out on the road some day!!

"Accelerating or coasting" but not while driving?
Sounds like a little gear whine, which some mid engine Ferrari's have. My 99 Modena coupe has a little whine at 70-80 MPH. My 348 years ago had a similar whine. Tried several different gearbox fluid in the 348, with Redline making a little (positive) difference. Routine gearbox fluid changes in my Modena gated coupe haven't made any difference. If it doesn't bother you, just ignore it.

Congrats on the new ride! I’m a new owner too and totally understand the feeling, can’t tell you how many times if looked down to see a flashing light in the warning area and my heart skipping a beat only to realize it was the turn signal indicator :)

As for questions, I have a 430 so may be different but I don’t hear any whine from gearbox and my paddles are the same size. I have the carbon fiber paddles, but would assume the metal ones are the same size too. Maybe 360 paddles are different?

Hey Zanny - I hear the noise when accelerating and when coasting in gear (i.e. engine braking), but not when coasting in neutral which I believe should eliminate the wheel bearings. Appreciate the input!

Do you get a lot of action with a nickname like “hammer pants”?

Welcome, another guy to be jealous of.....although it’s usually wealth related.....LOL.

My Dad also passed in ‘96, still miss him.

What was the event in North GA?

I'm fairly new to my 430 coupe, and it makes all sorts of mechanical noises, including what I assume to be the whine you're describing. The well-respected shop that did my PPI wrote on the report "performed road test -- all noises normal." Which is great, because I would have been wondering as well, since it does make a lot of noises my other cars don't. But I think it's just the nature of an extra-mechanical "race car." Interestingly, the whine is pretty even in gears 1-5, but gets significantly quieter once I shift to 6th.

It was a scavenger hunt / group drive from Atlanta up to Montaluce winery. I drove down from Asheville and joined the rest of the group for lunch and socializing - - fun event and and awesome group of people. The noise in my car also goes away in 6th - - I believe because the gear ratio in 6th is close to 1:1 so the transmission is doing less work. Thanks for the piece of mind!
