It is an early 1972 Euro car. 0162 It also doesn’t have the metal covers over the inside of the rear tail light assemblies. The only other one that I’ve seen like this is the brochure model. Hello Carmine. You missed my post obviously. We decided back in September this year no go for BORA CINQUANTA in September 2021 due to Covid concerns (including also the reluctance of some to travel because of it), due to the known number of Boras in Europe being surprisingly low (less than 50 after canvassing all clubs whereas I know 130+ Khamsins in Europe and the UK) and in turn the number of those that would ACTUALLY turn out being insufficient. It seems an awful lot of Boras are tucked away under the radar, I don't believe that many were crashed or parted out because they were usually coddled to the contrary of say Indys and quattroportes, used every day including rain snow and salt. We will possibly organize a Bora celebration in future but AFTER 2022 which is when KHAMSIN CINQUANTA will take place June 16-19, 2022 (in 19 months but it is off topic in the Bora thread so no questions here please). However I am not willing to do two such major events the same year, far too much logistic work. If we do it it will be Modena to Tuscany.
Marc, suggestion from someone that’s organized an event or two. Combine the Bora CINQUANTA with the Khamsin CINQUANTA for 2022.
Hello Joe, Thanks for that suggestion it makes sense and is smart however there are several reasons why it is no go. For logistical reasons at K50 such as the touring rally logistics, chosen resort, concours site, staffing, I can't have more than 50 cars. I already know who will help, who will judge (Ermanno Cozza health allowing, Fabio Collina and Adolfo Orsi who all agreed pending factory approval for the first two which was granted in 2012) Because of the very, very strong desire people have to come back after K40 or for those who were not there but have seen the video, read the event reports, there is a lot of energy towards the event! It will also be in a different region of Europe altogether easy to access for most: Lakes and mountains. I really think that out of 130 K's in Europe and the UK we can gather 50 for K50 (and the car's name Khamsin is the Arabic word for fifty). THAT is my goal, it would be a fantastic affirmation of the car's legacy after it spent far too much time forgotten. We already had 27 K's in 2012 and could easily have had 30: if we were to merge both event there would effectively be a 30 K cap to make room for 20 Boras so K50 would not be better than K40...whereas the primary motivation behind all the work needed to generate an event like that is to blow the 27 count number out of the water. We have people from the US, Lebanon, a Mediterranean island and all over Europe who want to come with their K's. I hope to persuade some other faraway K owners to come with their cars as well. Medium and long term storage before and after the event as well as customs clearance and harbor pick up will be provided to non European owners. In contrast when you make an event about two models you cut the motivation in four, you dilute the energy. By waiting till 2023 for an International Bora gathering it gives a chance to locate more of them in the woodwork by talking to all shops who have serviced them, networking...little by little the list can grow and from that larger list the number of cars who actually come -as opposed to those who say the will but don't get their act together- grows as well. It also gives those who have a Khamsin (19 months notice now) or Bora 34 months notice to September 2023) but have it in a warehouse unused for years the impetus and time to actually decide to wake up and reawaken the car. There are many of those in the case of Boras and getting them to re-engage with their car is key to a successful car count but as you know it takes a lot of motivating. For K's though it is not necessary: a pool of 130 running cars in Europe and UK to gather 50.
Bora 008 is currently being offered for sale at mobile.de https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=311567868&damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED&isSearchRequest=true&makeModelVariant1.makeId=16600&makeModelVariant1.modelDescription=Bora&makeModelVariant1.modelId=1&pageNumber=1&scopeId=C&sfmr=false&fnai=prev&searchId=4026ce82-d545-27c8-715b-f55aa06c31ae or also here : https://www.movisti.de/ I last saw the car for sale a few years ago at the Techno Classica in Essen / Germany. In your photo, the car looks in my eyes original, untouched. The text from the supplier in Germany says that the car is in the original color green. In your picture it seems to be silver. Kindly Zdenek
Very interesting. The car (008) was for sale via The Beverly Hills Car Club, I believe in 2014, and it was silver. The car was owned by a gentleman in Virginia (3rd owner?) for about 17 years. Before that it was imported from Italy by the second (?) owner, and was US EPA and DOT certified at that time. The third owner informed me that over the years there were a number of modifications made resulting in a very reliable car, so it was not original. By the way, it appears that I was incorrect in claiming that this was the first production Bora, apparently there is an 006 out there. Best, Art
Please see the attached mock-up of my Bora which will appear in this 1st class coffee table publication Retromotive Vol 10 to be appear next week. The car and publication just compliment each other so nicely. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice writeup. https://petrolicious.com/articles/this-1973-maserati-bora-4700-is-a-beautiful-bronze-sculpture
Hello Art, hello Zdenek, I can put some light on the #008 period between those years. When it left the US, Bora #008 was owned by the Gallery Aaldering in the Netherlands. It stayed untouched until end of 2015, then Nick Aaldering decided to make a restauration an sell the car. He painted it in its original verde again. When #008 was ready to go, he took it to the "Interclassics" in Maastricht an sold it within a single day on the 15. january 2016. Here the more precise early history of the car: AM117.008 1973, green / beige (?) the 1. post-production BORA! Dec.3,1971 delivered to a dealer in Rome/Italy. 1973 until sold to an Italian industrialist near the Swiss boarder. Later with Giovanni Giordanego –Cuneo/Italy, registered CN 386587 Febr. 1986 with John Mowbray -Dharahn/SAUDI ARABIA, payed $17.000 later imported by Mowbray to New Jersey/USA. 1995 with John Summerville -Midlothian.VI./USA, now silver/black 2005 still located in VIR./USA Oct. 2014 offered for sale in Beverlly Hills.CA., USA, asking US$229,000
Well, I have not much about #117.49.040: AM117.49.040 1972, first car with 4.9.l.-engine 1985 with Bruce Ballhaus -Cincinatti.OH./USA 1991 with DREAM CARS -LA.CA./USA, but claiming the car as being a 4.7-Liter!
Walter, You never cease to amaze me! I know your vast expertise in the area of racing Maserati but I never knew you extensive information in production car. I know you have or had a Merak but I never figured you for gathering information on the Boras.
Thank you for looking. Very interesting 1985 and 91 data. That said, according to factory records, AM117.040 is a 4.7 L Euro car delivered to Sport Auto Rome on 1/19/72. Wonder when/how it made its way to the states?
Elliot, Yes, I still own the 1982 Merak (EU-specs., one without any Citroen-stuff inside...). I have about 5,500 cars made by Maserati in my archive and a collection of about 8,000 photos of Maserati cars from 1926 to 1964 but with main focus from 1950-60.
I have always liked what you did with your Merak. It showed what the potential of the car if Maserati had been in better financial shape.
Elliot, the very last 68 Merak SS came without any components made by Citroen. This was not (!) made by me...
