They weren't fast stock and were maligned, but the V8 models have all the basic bones to be a decent muscle car. Certainly they handled better than their predecessors. the King Cobra II was a bad looking mother.
They were silly and slow-but, better than nothing I guess. I remember when that Cobra 2 was introduced-it looked the part and we all thought the glory days were coming back. No such luck. Little did we know that cars we could have only dreamed about were on the distant horizon.
Look, what were your choices in America in 1974, 75. Gas was expensive, insurance rates were going crazy in high po cars and Nixon gave us a 55 national speed limit. Unfortunately for me I was a junior in HS. I perservered and finally got '69 TVR Vixen in 81. I think the redeeming quality of the Mustang ll is the front suspension which so many kit cars pilfered. Agree, it did get us to the Fox body which was the bad ass of the day at 225 HP. My how times have changed.
My father had one in 77 and 78. As a kid we thought this was the coolest car around, T roof and all. I think the V8 was something like 135 hp, it made a nice sound and felt like it moved the 2 times my father floored it. Was too young to drive then, so have no idea how they ran. I think this was also one of the charlies angel cars. I also remember Popular mechanics compared it to the trans am and the Mustang was better rated in that test due to "handling". In 1980 the turbo trans am had a 0-60 of 9.8 seconds and that was some type of headline.
I took my parents 1973 Lincoln Continental Town Car and proceeded to fail my driving test, by driving up a curb. The very next day, I took my brother-in-laws Mustang II (six cylinder) and proceeded to pass my driving test, with the same instructor. Years later, I passed my private pilot's license FAA flight exam the first time .
The thing about this era of car is the HP is so low it's easy to get better performance from the engine. When you're looking at less than 1/2 HP per Cubic Inch there is lots of room for improvement.
the stock v-6 was not very quick, or good handling, which left lots of room for mods and improvements. only to discover they overheated like a *****. had one in '75ish? Image Unavailable, Please Login
