QV - Rattling noise at start-up

    Sometimes at start-up I hear a rattling noise which sounds like it's coming from high up in the engine compartment. It seems to occur when I haven't driven the car for a few weeks and it is cold outside. The noise goes away after about a minute. It might be from the warm-up regulator area, or so I'm guessing. I don't hear it if I start the car again over the next few days or when the engine has been run for a time. I had the regulator rebuilt about 2k miles ago. Could it need replacement?

    Alex, assuming it’s not a neighbours cat under the hood, can I ask what your isle is like at start up in these conditions? Ie is it erratic at all and is there anything touching or loose that could simply be causing a simple rattle from vibration?

    You say it disappears when warm, have you had it started cold with the lid up and watching/listening the engine?

    Tick tick tick tick - it's the little plastic belt on the alternator. It gets stiff and slaps around a bit, and sometimes there's a static electricity crack as well. Get a bit of oil from the dip stick on your finger tip, reach down (engine off!) and dab a little on the inside of the belt.
