If I were Alonso I'd offer to drive for free. He has all the money he needs, but only two titles.

Mercedes had three years of drama, they'll probably go for a rookie, Wehrlein probably being German.

What the hell?! Not even prepared to defend his own title in the best car? Shame.

Next year will have more aero which IMHO is where RB excels.

I hope they sack Elton yet, and then they'll need two drivers

    Likely

And a virtual guarantee that Lewis wins the title. That predictability is not good for business so I can see Bernie trying to get Fred into that seat

Exactly...They will find a solid No.2 that does not challenge Hamilton and takes points away from him in case RB i strong, so Hamilton finally becomes No.1 driver without team order! Problems solved...

Can forget Ric or Max though. Even if they wanted to, RBR simply won't accept the money, whatever telephone numbers get offered...
    +1

And should be easy enough to get out under his contract. Performance of the car is still beyond ****.

I think so, too. He has achieved everything, there is no climbing higher.
And then, he's got an exceptional family bond, so no doubt, the end of F1 won't mean a drop to nowhere, for him, it will rather mean (I truly hope so), having more time for what he loves.

The race is on for seat two. They were talking about Alfonso a while ago for a possible after Hamilton time. Maybe history repeats itself?
I sincerely hope Mercedes has some decent competition so that next year won't be an early decider.

And it also means that Lewis will not get more than a verbal warning over the "radio-incident" last weekend...Mercedes can now say that they look into the future due to the change and do not look back. Very convenient for Toto as this does not give him any sleepless nights anymore...Hamilton, Toto and Nico happy!!!

with the changes for next year, i'm not sure it's a lock for lewis yet - the wdc. after these 3 years, i'd certainly like to see another team challenge merc. i'd just like to see someone in the merc who can take the fight to lewis and not just hand him the #1 seat. i'm still hoping alonso has a shot - his talent would shine again from day 1. at his age, he should do anything necessary to try to get that seat.

Sore loser Hamilton doesn't need a partner, he'll drive both cars as his ego needs to have it's own seat.

Good on him, he climbed the mountain now looking for pastures new.
Maybe the best is yet to come, Le Mans/Indy?

Wow, wonder how Toto and Niki are doing today? Any chance the Nico thought next years Mercedes might not have the historical dominance that the team has enjoyed the entire hybrid era? Nico has really left Mercedes in a tough spot, it will be interesting to see if Alonso can get out of his contract, otherwise it appears the best seat on the grid is going to go to a second rate driver.

I'm afraid we will be back at flexi-wings, diffusers, f-ducts and other aero trickery.

Nicole said the last race 'was the toughest of his entire career so far' . i respect him for having he guts to quit while he is winning, although the team player moniker has somewhat been removed after renewing his contract.

which historically has happened on a regular basis with the more usual 1 - 2 driver pairing (as opposed to the 1 - 1 they have had recently)

Very hard to leave the show. He's giving up an incredible seat. I hope he doesn't have second thoughts in a year.

    Good luck, Nico, and thanks.
