The end of the petrol or diesel powered car is coming. It's just a matter of time. Norway bans all non-electric cars by 2025 Norway to 'completely ban all petrol powered cars by 2025' | Climate Change | Environment | The Independent
I hope they have a plan for all the electricity required to power all of those non fossil fuel burning cars.
This is more of a feel good legislation. They know its not feasible. Hence the ban is almost 10 years out. Gives lots of time for future politicians to stop it before it comes into affect. They could ban the sales. But it will take decades to replace fossil fuel cars from the road. In most of North America (Canada and U.S.) horses didn't really get replaced as transportation until the road infrastructure made horse travel obsolete. In some Midwestern states and the prairies of Canada. Horse and wagons still used into the 1950's for hauling stuff and farming. Horses more reliable over fossil fuel vehicles at the time. Until electric have a decent travel range and quick recharge in minutes. We'll have fossil fueled vehicles in North America.
Maybe they will also cut all their North Sea oil production and help boost oil prices for the rest of the world.
In 2014 dollars, since 1971 Norway has generated from its North Sea petroleum wells $1.197 trillion - that's trillion with a "tr" !
Not true, new official statements today cleared that out as "misinterpeted". See how the media runs with BS globally. Norway makes insane amount of money from buyers of fossil fuel cars b/o skyhigh taxes. And Norwegians these days buy electric cars (highest per capita in the world but still a small percent compared to total annual car sales nationally) mainly because of incredible incentives (free city parking, free toll booths, very low fees overall) and government looses lots of cash on these EV early adopters. I'm pretty sure that when govt will try to put that tax load on EVs instead people will stop buying significantly. In other countries a BMW i3 is quite literally as expensive as a 5 Series (in Norway today an i3 is approx half priced vs 5 Series) which is why no one is buying them in the rest of the world, and when that happens here also I have no doubt Norwegians won't buy those type of cars either. The country is 1000 miles long and until Tesla reaches that range/there's a charger in every nook and corner in this country I don't think banning fossil fuel cars will happen in reality. Don't forget about all the workforce who don't have an EV alternative. Would loved to see EV ambulances and firetrucks.
By far the most people live in city's and drive a small distance on a daily basis. But it's not really about the current situation, it's about the future wenn batterys become more efficient, faster to charge, lighter and cheaper to make. And once more and more people/manufacturers will switch I think electric cars are inevitable.
I have no problem in letting electric cars compete with gas or any other form of energy. But to ban them seems like you are telling manufacturers you know better than they do what consumers want or what is "green". When you use fossil fuels to make electricity, it's still a fossil fuel. It's just been transformed from one state to another. People never think where their electricity really comes from. But they know gasoline comes out of the ground and burns in the air. It's more PR than anything but it affects people, businesses, and industry if government decides what it thinks is best rather than asking what is best.
Funding electrification of their tiny national automobile fleet with oil money... Thank you Norway, I'm sure polar bears are safe now.
Their fleet is tiny, their population is less than NY city, but their two national inv. funds are two of the largest in the world. So if they put their money where their mouth is and invest in electrification they will have an impact. And the bigger picture is that national governments increasingly move away from fossil fuel sources. The EU Co2 emissions policy already has it's effect on car manufacturers, on the cars and engines they make. And once more and better electric cars will be available the greater the incentive for governments to start thinking on (partly) banning (full) gasoline powered cars.
Exactly. If electric cars are so great they should compete against ICE cars on a level playing field.
The only way to achieve zero emission is to ban petrol and diesel cars. Zero emission is in EVERYONE interest. It doesn't matter what the consumers want: you just tell them what they get. As for producing electricity, the boffins will have to work harder in harnessing better renewable energy (tides, solar power, heat transfer, hydro electricity, etc...)| rather than fossil fuels. So, we keep coal, oil and gas in the ground and work with what doesn't damage the environment. What about huge solar farms in uninhabited warm areas, or wind farm alongside the coast?
Fossil fuels are NOT to be used to produce electricity; only renewable energy is ecologically friendly. Forget about coal, oil and gas: they are poisonous substances!!!
There are 2.6 million cars in Norway. Less than 3% of the cars are electric. What will happen to the 2.5 million or so diesel/petrol cars when they are banned? Should they dump them in the deep fjords? Politicians never have to worry because they send their travel expenses to the tax payers. The Swedish prime minister goes around in an Audi A8L armoured car with a W12 (380gr/co2) one of the ministers from the green party had the government jet fly from Arlanda to Bromma (40km) to pick him up. Another green party minister (or former minister, actually) painted her boat hull with poisonus paint...

Old vehicles should be recycled, and the scrap metal used to make new cars. Everything should be recycled. Nothing should be dumped; it's a waste of resource. Dumping is pollution!!! Politicians should have to abide by new environment laws like any other citizen, but you cannot expect a high ranking official to go to work without protection on bicycle these days with all the terrorists and lunatics in the streets. I am all in favour for the travels of government officials and parliamentarians to be scrutinised, and for all abuse to be punished.
Yes I have, but I have learned since that their use is to be avoided as much as possible: their poison the planet. Most of the plastic is in fact used as containers or packaging (wrappers, bottles) that are later dumped. They could be replaced by bio-degradable products that don't harm the environment. Nobody, but NOBODY can ignore the harmful effect of plastic.
Is it politics or economics? To me it's economics. Who doesn't want clean air and water? The question is what's the best way to get there and what sacrifices are we willing to take. This is a car forum. We are discussing the general direction of the automotive industry which has always been driven by government intervention. Otherwise we would not have seat belts and airbags or crumple zones. Discussing the figure powerplants of cars seems like a legitimate subject, no different than new bumper standards.
I've left the economic & environmental posts. The posts that were deleted, weren't talking just about powerplants, they referred to Trump, Obama, leftist and socialist policies in a categorical and derogatory manner. There's no need for that in this discussion.
Same crap here. Govt cars are A8 L with petrol V8s. Hipocrasy at its best. Ps They were not talking about banning those cars altogether but banning sales of them so that they would be phased out, if you understand. Also, the dealers, losing billions of dollars in sale might have a word in this matter too...
