I've decided to buy myself a watch for getting a 4.0 this semester. I currently have a black leather Armani dress watch, so I'd prefer a steel band or possibly a fabric band for this one. I've saved up some money from working and am comfortable spending up to $5,000. I was hoping that some of you may have suggestions. I'm looking for something that is casual that I can wear pretty much everyday, while also being able to wear it dressed up. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd agree. If you're going to spend that much go for the timeless Sub.

I like the Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver in that price range. Some very unique color combinations and bands.

For that much money, get a real investment-quality piece. A real Rolex Sub (pre-owned) is a good choice, maybe a Tudor or Omega if you like those. Think about if water resistance is important for swimming/diving or not.

+1 on the Rolex Submariner and would add an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. I have both and love them both, they are classics and will not go out of fashion. If you tire of either you should be able to resell them for close or more than you paid if you buy them right.

Go with the Rolex Sub. I have two S.S. Subs, the gold & stainless Sub with blue dial like the picture above, a stainless Daytona and the Everrose Gold Daytona. All great watches but for the $$ the stainless Sub is unbeatable. You'll love it for life.

I think a Rolex is a "safe" suggestion. Its a nice watch and the resale would be easy.

    Here are some others -

omega seamaster planet ocean - classic dive watch

chopard mille miglia - get some motorsport connection

If your more into the mechanical nature of watches and the workmanship, you can't go wrong with a Grand Seiko -- I'd look at a hi-beat or a spring drive -- both have interesting movements. If the fact that your average sorority girl won't recognize it bothers you then look elsewhere. I own a grand seiko spring drive GMT, I don't worry about resale because I'll never sell it. I also like that most people don't know what it is so you are a little under the radar.

Lots of good options in the 5k range.

Congrats on the 4.0. That's great. Go with the Sub.

Menty, I have to agree with these guys. Go with the Sub. Classic, Stylish, Casual, Looks nice when dressing up and a piece that will be recognized. Plus I have a few in stock and would love to help out a fellow F-Chatter ;-)

Everyone knows what a Rolex is. That can be good or bad. If you want one go slightly out of the box with a Sea Dweller.

For a dress/sport watch hard to beat Zenith El Primero. (Rolex Daytona predecessor).

In the same category is Breguet Type XX. Less known but higher end.

Or for something out of the ordinary a Breitling Emergency. Second most known high end brand and only Breitling has this feature in a watch; unique.

All used but much better values than a new depreciator. Sell for the same on the back end when/if you move on.

Uou can just about get into a breitling but for the budget you provided. Great looking. Munufacter. Nicer than a sub.

I do also like the breguet type xx option. Lovely chrono.
