We all comment from our experience. Myself as a car guy of 50+ years and as a midwest exotic car dealer who has specialized exclusively in 930s 76-89 for close to two decades. I have been in the CA fast track and bought many nice 930s from your area over the years. Most of the clients I have are usually interested in nice well serviced and carefully cared for cars that can be used. So the swing to more Pebble Beach type cars for some is very informative. I have spent time @ pebble on many occasions and have usually attended with a circle judge in early Italian cars, and judge locally myself. So for the 930 to be considered, by some, to be restored to show car level bodes well for future value. I also think Bruce Canepa is a very upscale Porsche enthusiast with comparable clients as I recall his owning and racing a 935 long before the current market craze. His pricing of his 930 @ $345K could be right on in his world. Many 930s do or will soon will require a complete restoration. The relative few that can achieve excellent original status and to be show and roadworthy without it should be highly prized and sought after. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree that Fred Simeone's book (and a day at his museum!) is a great 'course pre-requisite' for contributing to this discussion. A close reading of his thesis, however, would render a pretty clear verdict on the 930: most of them are not 'Important' by his definition. They are industrial objects built up out of replaceable component parts. So restore-away. Now, if your 930 won LeMans outright, it ascends to the 'Important' category, see Fred's Shelby Daytona as exhibit 'A,' and shouldn't be touched (or for Fred, driven much)
Secondly, a good restoration these days will cost >$200K, once you are 'in for a penny, in for a pound.' Therefore there is often a lag in the market where it simply costs more to restore a car than it's market value, yielding the maxim 'buy the restoration, get the car for free.' I'll bet 80% of the E-types restored in the late 80's fit this description for a solid 20 years hence. Folks were betting on a price trajectory that failed to sustain.

The Vintage Cars 'Market' Subforum has discussed this ad nauseum with lots of great data and observations.

My collection includes cars that have won preservation-class regional events, as well as a total restoration invited to Pebble 2015, with drivers in between. I don't feel dogmatic on the issue, and I sort of enjoy a certain amount of patina, but I insist on mechanical perfection since I'm too old to hitch home from the side of the road...

Many different opinions and ways of looking at it. I personally love original cars and patina. But it's definitely a slippery slope. But I surely don't want to be calling for a tow for the sake originality. Ultimately as long as you're happy with the car's representation and it puts a smile on your face, you're doing well.

This full resto'ed Euro '77 was shown at the LA concourse last summer. This is actually a driver. Rich that ad made me think of it. I wonder where this car falls on Pano's moving scale...

Flumpy apologies, credit where credit is due on the period ad. I have a 1976 factory service manual for welding the "new" galvanized Porsche bodies. Interesting info and shows the great lengths Porsche went to keeping the cars rust free. Excellent info for restoration projects. I have this on PDF if anyone is interested...

Thanks for sharing, and this shows that the timeless benefit that 1976 & 1977 930s received from Porsche Ag, as I pointed out earlier in the thread.

1976 Turbo Carrera 9306800011 at Lime Rock, Connecticut, September 1975. Photos are from a Turbo Carrera article in the PCA newsletter Der Gasser, Riesentoter Region. The article mentions that the silver turbo was one of four in the country being used as pre-production promotional vehicles for road tests by various magazines. The article also mentions that none of the four could be sold until they passed the 50,000 mile U.S. emissions test being conducted by one in Michigan. Chassis #’s 0011, 0012 and 0014 are known but what happened to 0013?

Another nice 3 liter Turbo with a Japanese speedometer.

Symbolic list the interior color as “8AT” but that is a 1977 light red color code (UK market code?) provided in Peter Morgan’s Original Porsche 911. It should be Copper Red (code 76) for a U.S. 1976 Turbo Carrera.

Could also be Buffalo as the Germans had an affinity for using this material as well. In pictures and from a glance it does have the appearance of suede.

BMW used the material quite a bit in its European executive sedans and the 635 during the late 70's and well into the 80's
