Drove my 01' 360 spider today to the gym and when I turned it off I heard a high pitched sound coming from the engine bay. Lasted about a minute or so then stopped. After working out it started right up but the transmission failure light is now on and it wont engage any gear- stuck in neutral. Thoughts???

sounds like a F1 pump failure. not shifting into gear would mean something is wrong with the F1 system.

I'd check your fuse/relay then check the electric pump

Fluid may be low on the F1 transmission. If multiple alarm pings occur this may be the problem.

Was way off on what to expect based on the thread title. Thought it might involve questions regarding a recent trip to Thailand or something.

Hopefully it's something small like a relay.

There are no special "buzzer" type relays that would go off if the motor is overloaded and is failing. If you heard a high pitch noise for about a MINIUTE (!!!???) this is most likely from the electrical motor of your F1 pump.

When you open the drivers'-side door, the F1 pump should start priming and you should hear the usual buzzing sound for about 3-6 seconds. If this does not happen, fill up the hydraulic fluid reservoir and get a small 12V DC and 7-8 Ams/hour battery and 16Ga wires to do the following:

    1) Turn the main battery switch off. Check the F1 pump fuse (a green maxi-fuse located in the compartment behind the driver's set) - if the fuse is burnt, you should purchase a 2-3 new 30 Amp fuses and replace it. Turn the battery switch on and see if the new fuse will restore the F1 pump motor function. If the motor is toast than it will blow the fuse (that is why you need to purchase more than one :)).

    2) Turn the main battery switch off. Check the F1 pump relay (located in the compartment behind the passenger's seat) - using the small 12V battery (described above) connect the + and - wires to the F1 relay spades marked by numbers 85 and 86; if you hear a click = the realy still works (repeat switching the relay on and off and listen if the sound is repetitive, which means the realy is OK). If you want to be 100% sure, when switching the relay on and off measure the resistance between spades marked 86 and 87 using an ohm-meter (when the relay is on, there should be no measureable resistance). If the relay is OK, install it back; if the relay is bad - get a new relay. Irrespective of the relay status proceed to the next step.

    3) Withthe main battery switch still off, check the F1 pump motor (located on the right side inside the engine bay) - just connect your small battery to the electrical connector of the motor and see if it works; if not - the motor is toast and you need a new motor (not the whole new pump).

    4) If the motor is operational, install a new fuse and relay (or an old, but functional relay) and turn the main battery switch on and listen to the pump motor. If you dont hear anything it is because the F1 pump motor rotor coils are not completely burnt, but draw too much current, which causes the fuse to blow.

Then, the verdict will be - you need a new F1 pump motor.

    Good luck,
    Juri.
