Thanks Ashman for the info. To Dave's point I want to post correct information so if somone knows the year of 32023 and I would guess the color is Azzuro Met (Light Blue Metalic) or Celeste Met(Sky Blue metalic)
The full, 17-character VIN (which came in about 1980 or so and thus doesn't apply to cars manufactured before then) tells you whether a car is manual or automatic. For example, in the VIN listed earlier, ZFFEB07B000045535, 07 in postions 6 and 7 indicates a manual car. 06 would be an auto. See www.red-headed.com. Select Articles and then Decoding the VIN is at the bottom of the page. Jonathan
Well done on the register it could surely turn into a great source of info, applaus for the effort. Sorry to be a spoilsport but there are a couple of points I would like to offer, Raising the values of these cars will be 'slightly' hard, be under no illusion any money spent on them is lost forever. I hope you prove me wrong! Not all owners are in this for the values. Interesting photo of a 458 Italia? facia on the site. On the registry some fundamental errors from top down, VIN 22579 Not a 400GT as its auto its a 400 VIN 25865 same as above VIN 39227 Not a 400GT its a 400i check fuel injection in engine photo VIN 50333 Not a 400GT in fact a 400i auto different era different model and different transmission. VIN 50807 Not a 400GT also not a 400GTi as also described. it is a 400i as its auto Out of 5 400GTs listed thats 5 wrong. This would mean that there are no 400GTs compared to your listing of 5 a big difference. Regards Alastair
Alastair: Thank you for the corrections, I am a rookie in all the definition of the word, but with time hopefully will increase my knowledge through help like this from you and others. I have always loved the 400 since I was 16 when a friends Dad bought a 400i and BB512. After a few great times in the 400 it was added to my must have list at an early age. My business brain cannot help but want to see a collective effort on organizing our cars and with a resource and documented history of the 400 we see a increased pride and potential value increase. At the end of the day if I can identify and help organize the majority of our cars in the world it was mission acomplished. I will have the errors corrected this morning after I talk with Viranya and post it once done. JR www.ferrari400.com
I was just reviewing your changes and car number 22579 was registered by the actual owner and even sent me an e-mail expressing his pride in his GT. I am unsure where to go with this one. Is it not a GT because of the vin or the year?? What is the trigger that makes you know it is not a GT??
Dont worry JR it is very confusing identifying the different models. On 22579 the trigger is that its an automatic which would mean that its a 400 not a 400GT which was the manual car. I will post a new thread which hopefully will help identify. Check my thread. Keep up the good work. Regards Alastair
I'm with you and as I try to learn more and read more the information is very broad and differing. To Dave's point it is important that the registry have correct information or it is just another source of incorrect information, which is not what I want. I am looking forward to reading more on your thread. The particular car 22579 the owner reports it as a GT and I have notes (from the internet) that say the 400GT was produced in a 5 speed and automatic from 1976 to 1979. I have two differing numbers on production 501 354 auto and 137 auto with 164 being right hand drives and then I have total production of 521. The evolution of the car I believe goes like: 365 GT4 2+2 400GT 400i of which a certain number (?) were 400iGT 412 of which to convertibles were Ferrari factory made I hope you can help shed some light on this and we can all confirm the numbers and then put the information on the Registry. It is amazing how much differing information exist. Thanks agai8n for your input. JR www.ferrari400.com
S/n 22579 was listed as a 5 speed when it was on Ebay as a project car earlier this year and had interior photos in the listing. Reported to be bought by an FChatter who I believe planned to send it up to Brettski's shop for an engine rebuild.
Got it, I have his e-mail and will confirm it is manual. Probably an oversite when he registered. He will be the first official GT registered.
My '78 400 serial #22579 is a manual. Brettski is indeed rebuilding the engine. Hopefully should get it back together soon, as he is just waiting for parts including a new clutch. If you guys are suggesting that the car's tranny was swapped out for a manual considering the serial number, I would certainly like to know. I will take some photos of the console tomorrow & post them. Perhaps the steering column ID will tell the story. Larry
Thanks Larry, for the update. I knew you bought the car but did not want to point that out in case you wanted to stay below the radar, so to speak. AFAIK, there is no indicator of transmission type in Ferrari serial number prior to the advent of the 17 digit VIN. As Dave ( I think) said, in the 400i series cars from the time of the 17 digit VINs, the indicator in the ZFFEB0"X" position is 6 for an auto and 7 for the 5 speed. I imagine the 412 might have similar type of numbering but I don't have that information handy, if I have it at all.
I am not sure, but I think that on a 412 the number 5 in the vin is for a 5-speed and the number 4 is for an automatic. I am referring to the second number in the vin which I think comes right before the letter B.
This happened to be on the Ferrari Life website. It is represented as collected from various sources by the poster so I can't vouch for its accuracy but it looks pretty darn good to me: The 1st digit Z = Italy The 2nd digit identifies the badge. Good stuff!! I just want to clear a quick item, it was brought to my attention recently there was some concern that I had built the registry to build up information and a list of owners then potentially sell it or profit from it in some way. That is the furthest thing from the truth. First I am not quite sure who would buy it for some substantial profit but regardless I am building it to create a resource for our cars (365GT4, 400, 400i & 412) the owners, enthusiast and potential owners. The bonus would be if in anyway it helped to increase the value and respect for our car. I have a contributers page to list those that in my opinion have helped in developing the site and a sponsors page for those who make some kind a financial contribution to the site. That is to help with the cost associated from building and maintaining the site. If I do not get a penny the site remains up and hopefully the registry grows. The last thing I want to be is controversial and I appreciate the help I have received up to this point. If you do view the registry and see a listing you might disagree with just e-mail, message or post and I will do my best to correct. The most important thing for the registry is for the information to be factual, helpful and meaningful. I made some corrections that were pointed out on the thread and added an alert tab which signifies if a car is a convertible or if there is some important info on the car. Thanks again for the support, help and feedback.
Ashman thanks again for the great info. I also spoke with Brett this AM about his car for sale. I am contemplating adding a 365GT to the collection.
Hello from Scotland, just on the Swedish car 25865 its a 400 not a 400GT as its an automatic. What about the red 22579 did you find out if it was a manual or not? I see your listing it now as 400. Regards Alastair
The Swedish car was registered by the owner and I have sent him an e-mail to advise him it is incorrect and I am going to change. This thread the owner of 22579 has pointed out it is a manual so we will change it to a 400GT later this AM. Thanks for helping keep it straight. JR www.ferrari400.com
A little late, however as promised, a few shots of my manual transmission 400GT with automatic stamped on the steering column ?? Can someone else with a 400GT let us know what their steering column designates? Is this just Ferrari using what ever was on hand at the time or perhaps a tranny conversion has been performed later in the cars life. thanks, Larry Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
My guess is the auto. tranny was switched out before importing to the States; this is what Dave's database shows for your car.... 1978 400 5-speed Red/Black Sold new in Belgium, the car was brought into the US through Texas in 1982 & has been in California ever since 1988. It was transferred by the owner of La Jolla Motors in 1996 and was used by him primarily for club tours and annual Monterey trips. Last owner 8.5 years. 8/2005 for sale via Russo and Steele auction (Monterey). You're kinda lucky in that 400i's & I believe 412's don't show tranny info. on the column.
Where are you going to put it John?..... or was your 360 & 550 photoshopped in your profile? Never saw 2 F-cars parks so close before, that's wild! B.
That photo is about three years old when I had a 355 and pulled it in late one night, to my horror I had jammed them together. We droped a piece of typing paper between them and contemplated for an hour what to do. Backed it out strait and put a small wax scratch that was buffed out. No evidence at all. Just call me lucky. California real estate is on the crash and burn right now so I will have to take advantage and get the dream garage one day. I would realy like to have a 365.
