All the 911's that have a 4 in their title, like C4, C4S, and all the 996 and 997 turbos, but not the GT2 turbo, its rear wheel drive.
Oh ya the 959 too. :)

The biggest bargains are probably in the 996 series cars. The 993s have historical significance being the last air cooled Pcars and will always command a premium. Also, there were significantly fewer 993s made than 996s or than 997s are being made now.

The AWD Porsche's started with the ultra rare and expensive 959 and it's extremely complicated AWD system. Then the 964 started the Carrera 4 tradition that has carried into the 993, 996, and now 997 cars.

    Bill,
You should post this question over on Rennlist. All Porsche, all the time...for the most part.

1st 4WD vehicle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche in 1900 for the Austrian truck manufacturer Jacob Lohner.

To answer your question, the 964 or the 996 would be the best awd 911 "bargain" on the market right now. The 993 series is still priced pretty strong being that the 993 was the last aircooled series and the purists are all over it.

Whether you choose to go with a 964 or a 996 would depend on what price point you consider "bargain"...

I would recommend Rennlist & Pelicanparts as websites to re-ask this question on...

I have a 91 911 C4, IMO the best for all around Porsche feel with some modern amenities (A/C, AWD, power steering, etc). I'm actually putting my car for sale, if you're interested. It's got 105k miles, asking 18.5K.

Damn ... that's a nice 964 you've got. I wish I would have seen that before I bought my GTI ... always loved the 964. My favorite Pcar though is the 965 Turbo S ... but yeah .. kinda expensive :D

Ive had both the 964 and 993. The 964 is a different and more complicated 4wd system. You might find the car somewhat stiff in its handling. The 993 system is more supple. You will find 964 4wd selling at bargain prices, for that reason. They do make a good snow car.

Be cautious with pre 92 1/2 C4's as the double mass flywheel has premature failure. I prefer the 964 C2 over 993 feel. The Turbo is much more fun to drive in rear drive, though the 993 turbo body rocks.

Most problems like that should have been rectified by now...I agree about the 964 feel vs the 993 though...I can even say I prefer the 964 over the 996 too.

All Turbos are rear wheel drive before 1996, less 959. Modern era turbos 993 and above are 4 wheel drive, except GT2 (best of the bunch).

Just as a matter of interest, I found an old R&T technical analysis the other day of the 959 from about 1983-1984. 959 was of course the first 911 based 4WD.

It said that the factory bought a Ferguson 4WD GT to test with - which they modified so that it could be used as RWD, FWD, or 4WD.

The initial reports were that the best drivers were still fastest with RWD in almost all situations - the more average drivers did better with 4WD, and NOBODY was faster with the FWD. This was on the CanAm course at the Weissach development center.

But it did convince them to develop the 959, especially with outside driver interest in the car for the Paris-Dakar rally.

Guys what did the 930 have? Was that 4WD as well? Thinking of an 1985 - 1988 model...

    Thanks!
