John, Great choice! I love falling water! There are a few Frank Lloyd Wright suntop homes in Ardmore, PA about 5 min from where I live that I am amazed everytime I see them and they were designed to be cheap and functional. It is amazing how he blended nature and modernization. Erik
The castle in Malibu is one of the gaudiest things I've seen, and I've seen it for 27+ years now. I just pretend it's not there or imagine a much nicer structure in it's place. FLW had some great designs, but as someone mentioned, practicality wasn't a paramount concern. Still, Falling Water is amazing when you consider it was built in the 30's. Napolis hit a home run.. That place does not look 20 years old, and it probably won't look 40 either. Here's one of my favorites (on the left); remember bigger is not always better. Image Unavailable, Please Login
CMY is that in Malibu as well? David Foster's house in Malibu was amazing, I knew his no longer step-son Brody from a Cabo trip. The house was nuts... I like this house in florida, I wouldn't mind an 1800sq ft. nightclub in my house being that I'm young... But wouldn't consider it one of the world's best Homes... http://www.theelmesgroup.com/?tid=231353&products=on&spage=search&searchstr=1268872&prodwherestr=(itemnum+like+%27%25%5B%5Bsearchstr%5D%5D%25%27)&search=Go
There is one house in Arizona that I consider to be truly amazing... It's about 24000 sq. ft. on 20 private acres overlooking all of Tucson, AZ. It has 3 home theaters, huge wine cellar, tennis & basketball courts, indoor gun/archery range, 2-story indoor gym w/sauna & steam room, 2 home offices plus pool/spa w/outdoor kitchen. The realtor said if in LA it would be sold at/ or around $70 million.... I've always been a fan of his. I've seen Talieson West in Scottsdale and had a chance this summer to tour both the Martin house complex and Graycliff estate in Buffalo. Both of the Martin properties are in pretty bad shape but they are restoring them now. I'm actually heading out this weekend to see Fallingwater.
Yep, in a neighborhood near Zuma beach. There's also a spectacular property just north of this area (which I couldn't find the picture of on my HD) that must be a 2500sq ft one-story built on on a cliffside acre. Just lawn surrounding everything, the home is bright white (blue roof) and it's even got a private driving range built down into the cliff that's over a cave on the beach. I actually start sounding like Carbon when I'm talking about it, but it occasionally pops up in movie & tv shoots so someone else must find it pretty interesting as well.
Thanks. Falling water is wonderfull but a bit unlivable. Very low ceilings. It was recently renovated and it's a jewel. I also like Sir Norman Foster esp. his HCSB Building in HK. (Not sure if he's done any houses) Note how in the winter the teak BBQ deck is removable so that the big storms don't damage it. The curved glass can take huge wind loads. We've survived Gloria and the "Perfect Storm" The House's curves send up rushing air waves that the birds know about. On windy days they come by, and "surf" the house. They fly right at the windows and the currents shoot them up into the sky. They wait in line and do it one at a time for hours. Pretty wild. Thanks for setting the bar just a bit higher.. that sunset pic is awesome! Interestingly, CA uses a similar bell (as on your dock) to mark the El Camino Real route. As for the birds, if seagull was at all pleasing to the palate it'd be sport. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Have a look at this video tour of a house currently for sale just outside London. It's an absolute bargain at USD$130 million incl tax! http://www.updowncourt.com/film.asp The "high bandwidth" version is much bigger and clearer
That's where my Bell Light is from. Many a night thoses Bell Lights led me back to my dorm (UCSB) I tracked down the Co. that makes them and had them engrave mine: The Beach House 1985. I also used airport landing lights embedded into the drive way. When I see the green glow I know I'm home.
Way back when the thread below was posted. MJC123 posted a pic of his pad. That would be my dream place! I'm not a huge fan of the big obnoxious 20,000+ sq foot houses. Most are too modern for me! I have no need for a bowling alley, a spa, or some of the other crazy stuff people put in their places. The gun/archery range would be nice, and I could put together a nice workout room as well. Anyway.....MJC123....has the house of my dreams! Some day I hope! http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=134852297#post134852297
I like my aunt's old house, she paid $19,000 for it and sold it for $289,000 40 years later. She recooped her investment 13x over. Most of these mansions depreciate in value because anyone with $50,000,000 to spend on a house want "their" $50,000,000 house, not "yours", so you are forced to sell for $30,000,000 so the buyer sees value in their mind.
Checkout some of the esates that Frank McKinney has built in S. FL http://www.palmbeachoceanfront.com/indexframepage.htm
Chalk me up for the minimalist crowd. The Mies van Der Rohe's Farnsworth House is always one of my favorites. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Nature is the best show, eh?
