    Have a bit of an interest in this car, am looking at its great record in the 1967 South African Springbok Series but am usure if the info compiled is correct, was 0858 driven by Australai Paul Hawkins, the author of the info seems to be unsure.

    Whats seemingly without doubt is the cars record
    Kyalami 9 hour: 3rd
    Cape Town 3 hour: 1st
    Lourenco Marques: 2nd
    Pietermaritzberg 3 hour: 1st
    East London 500 km: 1st

    Also according to the results I have, 0858 was competing directly against David Piper in 0854 for much of the series, I also remember reading that it was in South Africa where 0854 met an unfortunate end( sorry havent been following that thread...at least not from the begining)

    Back to 0858, it returned to South Africa for the 1969 Series being raced by Alistair Walker, results werent quite as positive.

    Kyalami 9 hour: 14th
    Cape Town 3 hour: DNF
    Lourenco Marques: 2nd
    Bulawayo 3h: DNF
    Pietermaritzberg 3 hour: did not start.

    Of course some of this info might be wrong so I stand under correction. Does any know where 0858 is today and are there maybe any pictures?

    At some point s/n 0858 was modified in a barchetta tipo 603, engine was a tipo 247 (4175,64 cc), the car was then called 350 P4 / CA Barchetta (or 350 Can-Am).
    The car has been rebuilt in its original form and resides in USA (Walter Medlin collection).

    The good news about the 0854 fire in SA was that Piper had removed and stored her original alloy body and what burned up was his replica fiberglass body and as he said in his book 0854's original chassis/engine/and gearbox survived the fire and Piper had 0854 up and racing in a few months.

    The car was then sold to Australian David MacKay's Scuderia Veloce team, at the end of the '67 season, and driven by Chris Amon ....
    (sometimes teamed with local driver, Bill Brown).

    You've got to admire how quick they converted #0858 into Can-Am bodywork.
    Was bodied as a P4 Spyder in the July BOAC race, and by October it was in Can-Am format

    Interesting (if sad) little footnote to (the late) Paul Hawkins' ownership of #0858. The car was later sold on behalf of Paul Hawkins widow by David Piper, after Paul was killed in a tragic accident while driving his Lola T70GT in the Tourist Trophy at Oulton Park in May '69 ....

    Great info, as ever the members on here continue to amaze me with their knowledge.....Interesting story about 0854 because the pictures I have a picture of the car on fire and remember thinking that the car seemed to be glass fiber......of course our press here at the time said it was the orginal body....

    Sorry I haven't posted any photos of #0858 in it's 1969 Team Gunston '*** packet' livery, Jacques. :eek:

    Apart from the fact that I'm personally not too keen on that particular livery, I don't have any decent photos of the car racing in SA.
    Most of them are grainy / poor quality - scanned from books or motoring periodicals.

    Thanks again for the pictures, I must say the Gunston Livery is an acquired taste......I dont particularly like it.....
