Food for thought here. Same sized engine with 4 overhead cams, 4 valves per cyl, 2 per bank. 90 degree V8 3396 cc. BUT: producing 510bhp (with LMP2 reg air restrictor) Those 348 Challenge spec motors were missing a few tricks I reckon. http://www.embassyracing.com/LMS/Plans+for+2008.htm
Doesn't spec the rpm but indicates Max Torque of 332lbs ft-436Nm. These figures may suggest a 348 motor can produce far more than we thought for the track ?
Hp is just air and fuel in and out. It's easy to produce big power, just turn it faster. Piece of cake
It is just a question of how long you want the engine to last. The shorter lifetime the more hp´s //B//
At least one of 2 Michellotto-prepped 348 Competizione LMs ran 550 hp for the entire 24 hours of Le Mans (2nd place in 1994).
Thats more miles covered in 24 hours than some owners do during their entire 348 ownership............
348 challenge spec motors were dead stock using stock cats. Timing could be advanced to Euro spec, but the remainder was not allowed to be modified including the ECU's except removing the airconditioning belt. Racing motors have different life spans. Even Micheletto motor was brocken down and re-built after the race. Longevity is key in production street motor. Having said that there is alot left in the 348. Alot of emmission restrictions 12 or 15 years ago that take alot of hp out. Base model toyota, nissan, and acura sedan V-6's are putting out close to 300hp now with variable timing and coil in plug ignition. Group77racing (on this site, althought i have not seen him post in a while) made new intake and custom exhaust and is getting 400hp at the rear wheels. He has made quite a few other mods to his 348 without turbo or supercharger. You gotta think the 348 motor is easily capable of 350hp with simple mods to air intake and exhaust.
I have seen the intake set-up. Looks a lot like the 360 stock set-up, similar to two tall 4-cylinder intakes. Scott
Yeah! Where is that boy?! He was supposed to give us an update on the power gains he made via his improvements. But if he is getting 400 ponies at the WHEELS, I will be doing this mod to my car.
Interesting - those "natural" gains without diminishing longevity sounds great - Cat or Non-Cat. We already know that the 348 is motor is solid !
To my knowledge they are not the stock MAFS. I have no idea, that is a better question for Dave to answer.
Those are larger MAFs along with larger injectors. I will keep twisting his arm slowly to see what else he can come up with, Scott ;o)
Forgive my ignorance, but what is Zytek? Also, Nissans are making 300 HP from their V6 engines now, but those aren't the base model. Take comfort that people still have to spend about the price of a 348 to get 348 performance Now if we could take pointers from their efforts to double our HP...
Where's Dave? I suspect he is working on a boat he bought recently that is down in Racine Harbor. Fool! I tried to talk him out of it! He has this notion of sailing the Caribbean, sucking on Pina Coladas between tropical ports of call. Hmm, on 2nd thought, it doesn't sound too bad. Of course, it's a long way from Racine to San Juan, PR, esp. by water. Dave is my inspiration in doing my car. He told me he measured 398 Hp gross last August. Of course, I have learned that dyno data varies widely. Right goth? He was working on larger headers, cats and exhaust for what he expected was another 25-35 Hp. He bought a 1995 355 Challenge ECU (M2.7 management) and was trying to figure out how to fit it in. I figure as the winter sets in we'll see him spend more time with the car. In the meantime, I've got my project...
I'm sure if someone wanted to only track a 348 there is a lot of hp to be gained. Big maf, cams, injectors, 13 or 14-1 compression with race fuel, and no cats with big tube headers. It wouldn't be a street engine but I'm sure it could make some serious power. Darrell.
Is there a dyno sheet somewhere for that engine? The last claim I head was something like a 91hp gain, so about 380-400 crank hp, but I never saw any data of any kind to suport that claim.
It's a big BEAST of a sailboat!! ;o) (And I told him the same thing about the two best days of boat ownership!) Anyway, he mentioned around an 80hp increase, no dyno sheet that I know of. I presume we'll hear something from him in december when it's time to chain himself in the garage for the winter, S
