There are a number of threads on this subject but I'd like to get a new perspective on the kind of sound available from aftermarket mufflers for fuel injected 3x8's.

My preference is for a quieter idle and as close as possible to an F1 scream when I want to go hard. (I know its only a 328) I don't want the car to be too loud during normal driving. It's hard on the ears and the attention these cars garner from the look of the car is great but I'm not sure that I want people 5 blocks away to hear me coming all the time. What's the best muffler to achieve this?

    Thanks
    Al

Don't have one myself but would like some comments on some custom or homemade setups. i wanna keep the cats but change the can to a magnaflow or something similar. Nothing too loud but maybe a little more rumble than what i got now. Those $3-$4K ones are just too expensive for a can.

x-ost is a very nice affordable solution, I think. Don't know exactly what they have for your car, but as an all stainless exhaust, they sure do look purty.

I'm puttin' one on my Dino next week. I'll report back on how they sound on a carbed car.

I changed the stock muffler to a Larini sports exhaust as the stock made the car sound like a strangled cat IMHO. The sports exhaust sounds great under accelleration and on the open road/freeway etc but around town and at idle I find it a bit "boomy" and a little uncomfortable. As I live in the city and there's always some town driving to do I'm thinking of swapping back to stock. Tried a test pipe with stock and with the Larini and it didn't really make much difference in sound although the engine bay temps went way down.

    Cheers

When I bought my GT4, it had two 18" glass-packs.

Ripping onto the freeway on my journey back to Los Angeles, was a thrill I will always remember too. But after the first 6hrs of driving, I was wishing for something much quieter.

When I got back home, I read here on FChat a post by Martin (Marankie), who put a 22" Magnaflow on his Yellow (Tweety) GT4.

I went to Reseda muffler, and they put the Magnaflow on mine for about $240. It's quiet on the street. But has the sound I want when jumping onto the freeway.

I still prefer the sound of the Tubi. But I can't justfy the expense. The Magnaflow makes driving (especially with the wife) much more enjoyable.

Does anyone have a Magnaflow WITH the cats? Is this worth doing or would it come out sounding about the same?

If you go to the Magnaflow website, www.magnaflow.com/01american.asp
they offer a number of different options but none for exotic cars. Mostly American muscle, trucks and sub compact sports cars. I call the tech guy and he said they have had a couple of people install their mufflers on Ferrari's with good results. They have sound files that you can download. Unfortunately none that even come close to a Ferrari engine. I listened to a Dodge V8 and it sounded pretty good. Prices are really decent compared to F-prices. The only way it would work is if you bought the muffler (they can't tell you what size cause they have no clue) and you would have to have someone fabricate the pipes and find the chrome exhaust tips etc. Anyone know someone who knows how to do this?

Lastly, they manufacture and offer 100 per cent stainless steel mufflers as an option with a number of configurations for dual exhaust or offset pipes.

    Any thoughts?

Have an Ansa Sport ready to go on my '82 GTSi but when we went to fit it last weekend we discovered the mounting brackets were totally different than stock! I had an Ansa Sport system on my old GT4 and loved the sound of it. When my friend bought that car from me he changed it to a Stebro which sounds even better!

My stock exaust sounds like a 3 litre chain saw if your trailing. however the ceramic junk inside is coming apart and every 6 months I have to take it off and shake the bits out. Ive been doing this for 15yrs and just finished the routine recently. From the cockpit its not bad, not boomy like tubi but I took the radio out in 1990 as you could only hear it when you are washing the car.My service manager is a keen old school muff shop guy and he says try something quiet and then blow it out @ 150mph[ I live in TX] should be just right. USA cars have lots of room so ditch the cats and go cheap at the muffin shop.

I have Tubi on my 328. It sounds throaty and mellow at idle, nice scream over 4000rpm. It looks beautiful.

If you shift up to 5th gear during normal street driving, which keeps the revs under 3000rpm, it's not too loud. At freeway speeds, it would get annoying after a while.

The stock exhaust isn't much quieter. Oddly, you might check into some 'normal' replacement exahusts. I think all the sport ones (Tubi, X-Ost, Ansa, etc) are designed to make the car louder.

P.S. NEVER say it's 'only a 328'. You've got the best-looking regular production car Ferrari has made since the Daytona.

This has got to be the best sounding exhaust for the 328 I've heard. I can't read Japanese, but from looking at the pictures, they only have it available for Euro cars.

Can anyone help? I'd like to know approx. how much they cost and if these are available for US version 328s.

I've been working with a Ferrari chat member, Snj5 (Russ Turner) on this the last week. Russ has been working on a Magnaflow custom modification for his car and has installed a Magnaflow exhaust system. He's now ordered new custom headers and will once again modify his exhaust system. See his discussion: www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124323&page=7&highlight=performance+exhaust

Basically, we both like the sound of the Ferrari under load, but many of the aftermarket exhaust systems seem too loud and uncomfortable after extended periods of time. The challenge was to find an exhaust system that would purrr standing still or in moderate driving and then scream when you wanted to take care of business. Most of the mufflers discussed have too much loudness and if that's your preferance then it's the way to go.

Fast forward to today, our discussion has lead to some interesting combinations:

    1) Remove OEM Cat and replace with polished stainless steel Magnaflow #14259 muffler (basically you can roll a golf ball from one end to the other). The inlet and outlet diameter is 3". Then connect the 3" outlet to a 180 degree mandrel bent 3" stainless steel pipe to another Magnaflow SS muffler
#14278 which has a 3" diameter inlet and two 2.25" outlets. The two outlets connect to two 2.25" SS tubes that are connected to two dual resonated Ansa's.

The entire system is built from Stainless Steel. I have not started this project and have no idea exactly how this will sound. Russ has a single Magnaflow installation and he says that it's much better than the aftermarket and he feels the added muffler will sound even quieter but still give up the Ferrari sound bites we all want. Total cost for parts on this project is about $600. -an excellent value that I believe will serve it's purpose. I have no idea about the emission problem in each jurisdiction. At the moment I don't have a problem with cat removal in my province due to the fact that I run collector plates which don't require strict emission standards. Obviously, it may be a good idea to do your own homework.

I've got a Mille Miglia system on my 308 and I love it. I think ther's another thread in here on them somewhere. PM me if you want the direct contact details for the owner of MM mufflers here in Aus or I think Nick's Forza parts is selling them in the US. If I recall rightly he had sound bytes of the mufflers on his website.
