I've recently been concerned with keeping my engine bay clean and clean-looking. I've admired the engine bay of 360s, 430s & 458s-not a lot of busyness, just motor. So while I had the motor out, I fabbed this high-quality cardboard and duct-tape pattern for a shield for all the pipes and hoses. I'm thinking of manufacturing them. So, my questions are: 1. Do you like the idea if made from aluminum or stainless? I think carbon would be way too expensive. 2. How much would you expect to pay for something like this?

Does it make the car go faster? Owning a 348 with 70K miles and a racecar 358 I'm surprised at the call for an opinion on this. Are you getting soft in your old age?

Innovation is always good. That tells me that your brains cells are still intact and functional :) I can only appreciate good ideas, specially when they are put to good use. Did attend Pasadena Art Center with transportation design major for a bit and can tell when I see a good idea.
I say build one at least for yourself out of aluminium, install it for actuall fitment and looks and keep the specs. People will defenately ask for it. $$? Not sure. Take your cost of materials and labor, multiply it by 2. I hope that covers it.

Looks good - I'd be interested, but have no idea what the price would/could/should be.

I like the shaved engine look and this helps a little bit in that regard....

Being a previous vendor on other forums I'd say that this is more a labor of love, or an extension of your hobby. If you want to make 5-10 sets and know you're going to do it, your reputation here would let people feel comfortable in reserving a set based on your actual cost + XX% profit for your time/effort.

If the idea took off, you could look forward to making 20 to fill the entire market demand. *chuckle*

p.s.- If I had to guess how many beans were in the jar I'd say $250 is ALL the money.

I like it, slick very slick. And yes I would be one that would want in. Carbon way too expensive, aluminum or stainless? Which ever is easier to keep clean and install. Keep us posted. Price point, depends if you you doing the install :) but$200 to $300 seems reasonable
I would hop that it would not rattle, but with my stage 3 capristo I cant hear much if does.

This will not have any heating/air-circ issues?

I don't see why it would, but I'll test it with the prototype first to make sure.
    Thanks for the feedback guys!

Actually a great question - it's a little hard to tell from the pics, but is the airflow from the radiator/oil cooler fans restricted with this in place? When I removed my wheel well liners I noticed my car ran cooler.

Polished aluminum would really make the engine bay pop. Bruce, looks good but this does seem at odds with your other efforts to add lightness! ;)

Not to be a buzz kill. I do like the look, but what about air extraction from the radiators and air over the engine and out the louvered engine cover? Can you do a test run with the card board and see if engine temps are effected?

Opps. You already answered this above. Let me know how the test goes. If it were made out of aluminum I would think about getting one.

Look great, but for myself, i think the 348 is a work of art for itself. The first car in about 135 cars i owned....i dont want to modify.......

I think it looks great, but dropping some card board in the bay is alot different than fabricating something and then actually having solid mounting points all around the bay so it doesn't rattle and vibrate. Would be curious to hear if theres any difference in sound too!

C'mon, there's nothing better to decorate the engine bay than cardboard and duct tape! Talk about high quality biodegradable materials. Just imagine the status conferred on the owner for such fabrication! :) :)

My thoughts are that if you are going to do this, don't stop there. Make the engine compartment even prettier and install lexan in the engine cover (with heat vents) so we can see it.

Here's prototype #2. .032 Aluminum painted semi-gloss black to reasonably match the engine compartment. I think I'll use this one to road test to see where mounting or reinforcement is needed. I've refined the pattern to make the edges and clearances crisp, so the final unit will be near perfect. Photos with and without for comparison. When mounted onto the lip around the engine compartment, the bend will be a little more acute.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to engine temperatures driving about with that in place. Do you have any way of measuring those on the move? :)

    All the best,
