Thought this may be an interesting question to create some friendly debate: What are your favourite 'designs' (whether a house/building, car, or object of any type whatsoever)? Basically what are the specific objects you like the look of most (for whatever reason)? Mine include the following: Cars - Dino 246, Ferrari F355, Aston DB9 Houses - Garcia Residence (Lautner), Case Study House #22/Stahl House (Pierre Koenig) Objects/things: Alessi juicy salif juicer by Phillipe Stark - I absolutely love this item - I have one that I've never used as a juicer ever, it just stands on my desk looking cool... Dude - thanks for starting this thread. Good idea. Ha the Stark juicer is a scream. Great design. Pure Flash Gordon. But there's no way to use it without getting juice all over your hands. Your assessment is perfect. Using this is a complete mistake. Too strapped to dig far, but this is one of my favorite objects - it's from Africa and is about 100 years old. From the San Francisco de Young Museum. The clarity of the form, its modernity, its confidence and scale - quite evocative.... Jon Image Unavailable, Please Login
The Barcelona Chair and the PowerBook. Not so sure about the S5, though. Image Unavailable, Please Login
As probably some of you are aware, the iconic Barcelona chair design was a piece of the furniture set designed by L.Mies van de Rohe for the German Pavillion of the Universal Expo held in 1929 at the Montjuïc Park of Barcelona. It is still on the market. The Pavilion itself was an splendid sample of the MvdRs advanced architecture design trend. Dismantled soon after the event, as most of t other nations pavilions, was rebuilt on middle 80s in the very same place and today hosts the dynamic LMvdR Fondation. More info: [email protected].
While writing the previous reply I have been caught by the clever design of that classic winding chromed iron thread paperclip, lying on my desk ready to prevent the paperwork mess gets messier. Can any other handtool beat its "function dictates form" logo that a true design has to meet? Sure, Monza track designers were influenced by its rational and atractive line layout. Another hard-to-beat design is IMHO, the inmortal clothes wooden peg.
I have to admit a fascination with classic salt and pepper shakers. They are wonderfully functional (don't forget the lemon seed) and varied in their design. Clear glass shows the contents, stainless steel creates perfectly sized distribution holes and no corrosion. I think this was one of the first widespread uses of stainless steel. Yet, as far as I know nobody knows who designed the first one. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
1.- Fully share your choice for A-M DB9 for favorite modern four-wheeler design. 2.- Strong contender for best ever car design is IMO, early Citroën 2CV.
I disagree about the DB9. It looks alright now, but it just doesn't have enough 'oomph' to leave a lasting impression. I remember being a kid and thinking how awesome the DB7 looked; they already look so outdated, and they have only been out of production for a few years! The DB9 will follow in its footsteps and will soon be forgotten. The 599, on the other hand, is controversial now and will be in the future, but it will certainly be a memorable and imitated design nonetheless. I can't think of any current production cars that are my favorite designs, but I would certainly stick the Enzo somewhere in there, which is close enough.
i am one of those who worships apple, so i gotta say ipod, powerbook/macbook, iphone, etc. i also like the bmw idrive (great concept, poor implementation) i think stainless steel miele laundry machines i got are example of a good industrial design: http://www.f l i c k r.com/photos/jkoum/354659938/in/set-72157594466850632/ in general i like the minimalist designs... oh and my aeron chair is as hip as it was when i got it 8 years ago
Iceburns is right. Although The current Aston Martins are quite beautiful, they are burdened by their reliance upon earlier designs. Too much continuation, too little innovation for my eyes... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have a thing for golf courses. I don't play golf at all, but I can just look at it and be relaxed for whatever reason. They look perfect. Too perfect if you ask me...http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/8590/golfcourselj0.jpg
Agree - absolutely brillant. And for me, a less simple design but an ultimate in so many ways... F4u - every complex curve and proportion totally driven by function into completly functional thing of beauty. Every shape and detail is driven by an engineering requirement producing a work of art. hahaha!!! I actually have one of those in white! My friends say they feel like women at the gynecologist when they sit in it.
